Sippy Cups, Straw Cups, Any Favorites?
Hey Everyone, Kate has been off her bottle for a whole WEEK! Can I get a Whoooo, Whooooo?
Anyways, we have been using the First Step sippy cups. The hard plastic cheap ones from Target. I think they are classified as disposable. We chose those because that is what they use at daycare. The only problem is that she chews on the spout part and cracks them after only a couple uses. So I am looking to change the kind she is using. Hoping to find a more durable solution!Do you have any favorites? She also likes straws, but she always tips the cup and then nothing comes out of the straw. How do I get her to stop doing that? Or do I just get her sippy cups? What brands do you use?

When we first transitioned the girls we just changed the Avent nipple to a soft sippy spout. Now we use the Playtex sippies that can be recycled after they wear out and Kleen Kanteen. I used to have some that had straws but I found them too hard to get really clean.
Congratulations to big girl Kate!

We use Playtex-brand and love 'em! We started with My First Sipsters b/c they have handles and a softer spout. They lasted quite a while but the spouts eventually started to split. We graduated to Insulators. Both are BPA-free.

I have read that the straw cups are much better for the child's mouth/speech development than hard sippy cups, so if she likes them, you may want to stick with them. My daughters did the "tipping" thing too at first, but with coaching they figured it out. The girls did chew on the straws. (We used the "take and toss" type though we didn't toss them.) I transitioned to regular cups as soon as I could as it is so much more convenient.

For us the key was something with a screw-on top so it wouldn't pop off. Our son did not like Avent.
We're currently using SIGG cups. Although these are not a "sippy" style and are something we went to later, if I had to do it over again I would have tried these first. I suspect our son could have used them instead of a regular "sippy" style top. They are expensive but they last forever.

We used the flip-top straw cups exclusively with DD. But...she never took a bottle (nursed exclusively) and for the life us we couldn't get her to figure out how to tip a cup to drink...she just expected a free flow when she sucked on anything in any direction.
So I can relate to the "usage challenged" issue. We tried to put Jorge on straw cups but he just couldn't figure it out either right away. So we just gave him a regular cup at meals with about 2" of liquid in it and he does fine. Yes, about every other day we have to mop up a spill and we have to enforce a "cups up front!" rule to avoid the elbow bumps, but for the most part it works fine. We don't allow either kid to walk around with drinks of any kind so that's not an issue either at our house. Eventually we started giving him a straw in his open-top cup and he got that, and now we can use a straw cup if we need to do a drink in the diaper bag or at a relative's house who isn't so open to spills. We use the flip-top kind from Playtex (I think!?) where the top looks like a quarter circle and flips to reveal a chewy soft-rubber straw that's a typical straw diameter/shape. We bought ours about 3 years ago before BPA hit the news so I don't know where they stand or if there's a BPA friendly version. Julie

I have found the only sippy cup that will not leak no matter how it is shaken, tipped, or dropped in the 4 years we've used sippy cups in this house. They are relatively new, made by Playtex. They are the Twist 'n Click cups. I've found them at Target and Walmart. Seriously, they are wonderful! I wish they had them 4 years ago! They are really cute too. I'm not a fan of straw cups because we have always had leaks with those or they don't work for one reason or another.

We use Avent for water with the kids...both have allergies and need to drink during the night - they don't leak.
We use the Platex cups that look like thermal coffee mugs. They can drink normally, don't spill too much and they look like "mini-me" walking around the house with their "coffee cups". There aren't any characters on them, so they don't look too kiddy for our 6 year old. ![]()

we prefer to use cups and bottles that don't leach endocrine inhibiting compounds into the water (bisphenol A) for everyone in our family. BornFree - Welcome to BornFree - The Safe & Smart Feeding System
this brand isn't 'leak proof' but we're willing to compromise on that to keep these chemicals out of our bodies. info on bisphenol A http://www.wwf.org.uk/filelibrary/pdf/bpa.pdf Since You Asked - Bisphenol A i'm erring on the side of "some concern" by the NTP...

Hi Kim,
We use the regular cup too. It totally works. And at Kate's age, I bet she would do great. Good luck and let us know how she does.

Gerber
I like the Gerber Graduates because you can suck the liquid out easily. I found them at Target and the replacement valves at diapers.com. I recommend trying to drink out of the cups because some of them are very, very difficult. I have not found a straw sippy cup that is easy to suck up the water.

We use Playtex insulators and love them! We use all the same kinds so that we know that any top will go with any cup. My boys didnt like sippy cups but loved straws cups from the beginning. They figured out if they tipped it up, then they werent going to get much out of it. But, with the playtex cups when they do tip it up, I think they still get some juice or milk. I highly recommend these playtex insulators.

I absolutely hate valves! They are too hard to keep clean I think and cups still leak at times.
I have just discovered Disney Learning Curve sippy cups and they are wonderful. No valve, they do not leak if turned upside down and they are insulated. Walmart has them 2 in a pk. for $6.97. My kiddos love the designs too, they have disney princess, mickey/mini mouse, cars, etc. Best cup I have found yet!

Kim, Whooo Hhooo!!! Please do tell, how did you get Kate off the bottle? I am having a big struggle with Luci especially nap and bedtime. Luci uses the Twist 'n Click cups when she is not on the bottle........
I read your other post I hope you are feeling better. Megan
