OT - anyone have a Sleep Number Bed?

Does anyone have one and if so, any feedback or reviews? Are they as great as the commercials claim, and how much are they?? We're thinking of getting one. Our king bed is 10 yrs old and I toss and turn all night!!

my parents do

My parents have one. My mom LOVES it, but my dad does not care for it so much. My dad is an over-the-road truck driver. So, he is not home every night to explore the right number for himself. He is only home 2-3 nights a week. He is having a hard time finding the right number. My mom, on the other hand, is home every night to figure it out. She has found her number and is very comfortale with it.

Probably not much help, but thought I would chime in.

Michelle, who used to mod here on the forums, has one - when I went to spend the weekend with her a while back, I slept on it - I wasn't all that impressed.

I'm a 'hot' sleeper - so having the plastic really made me run hotter than normal.

I was comfortable - but the fact that it seemed to 'retain heat' because of the plastic was a real bummer for me. DH and I had considered one for a while - but this experience was enough to change my mind.

I have a good friend who has one - she loves it. As far as I know, MichelleB loves hers too

Well, the stuff that holds the air - under the padding that makes it look like a mattress.

They have these 'air tubes' that are made out of plastic/rubber/whatever holds the air in...and it made me sweat...

We just got our's about 2 months ago, I am so in love with it!!!! I have had serious back problems for a while. I've been in physical therapy for over a year and have constant pain when sleeping. This is the first time I have been pain free in a long time! I could do commercials for this bed I love it so much!

We have the memory foam model. I have no idea what the plastic is.

First question:

Do you cuddle with your hubby or do you sleep on opposite sides of the bed for the whole night?

My DH and I HAD one and we hated it! The problem is that we like to cuddle (all together now.... Awwwwww! ) and if his leg was on my side of the bed - it changed my sleep number. (think water bed - if someone moves to your side)

Also - if we wanted to cuddle at all - it meant that we were sleeping on the core between the two air bladders. Not real comfortable. My FIL actually broke down the foam piece between the two air bladders because he sleeps in the middle of the bed during his daily naps.

My opinion: DON'T DO IT! We gave it a shot for about 2 years and finally decided that it wasn't worth it because we typically sleep in the middle of the bed.

I have actually steered many people away from buying them because (1) they are pretty expensive and (2) they just don't seem very practical unless you sleep on your own side.

I also hated that my side of the bed looked sunken in when I made the bed because my sleep number was so low.

JMO. I wouldn't ever buy one again unless my hubby decides to sleep on his own side of the bed! haha!

OMG I hate ours. We bought the most expensive one 2 years ago and I would give you our to get it out of our home. Like previous posters if you cuddle or sleep in the middle it sucks. It's like sleeps on an air mattress. I won't buy another, but I think they do a 30 day trial. My friends got one and 1 week later they sent it back at no charge.

I'm thinking by reading this thread, we can all figure out who the cuddlers are and who are non-cuddlers!
tee hee!!!

PS Our sleep number is now in our guest room and we are thinking of replacing it because we feel guilty when we make guests sleep on it!

Just to clarify... my FIL broke down the foam core on HIS bed - not ours! I laughed when I re-read my earlier post. We aren't THAT kind of family - he has his own bed at his own house that he takes his naps on! hahahaha!!

LOL! I was thinking the same thing. My parents have one in their guest room and DH and I really like it but since we sleep on it maybe 4 or 5 days a year I don't really feel qualified to express an opinion. But we do both sleep on our own side!

I don't have one, but we slept on one for two and a half weeks in a hotel while waiting for our son's adoption. I didn't care for it at all-my number depends on how I want to sleep and since I am a restless sleeper, this meant I woke up to adjust the bed every time I rolled from side to stomach or back. Not good at all for me.

I'm thinking the "cuddlers" were sleeping on an old sleep number bed.
Our bed has no movement at all and could never be compared to a water bed, not even close. You cannot even feel movement if the other person leaves the bed. It takes about a week to figure out your correct sleep number and once set it shouldn't need to be moved, unless your gaining weight or something has changed. We cuddle, but I can't tell any difference from the middle to our sides. Maybe if we were at totally different extremes on a number we could. We are only about 45lbs difference in weight, and we are about 20 off in numbers. We have the memory foam version (innovation series #9). Also, as previously stated , there is no plastic on my bed either. There are several (9) different versions of this mattress as well, so it could have been a basic mattress they were sleeping on.

How is the 'air' held in your bed, if there is no plastic bladder?

We just got one in November. Since you are asking about price, we dropped about 6K on the biggest, best version of it. My husband and I both have bad backs, his exponentially worse than mine.

1. It takes some time to get used to. Basically it's a glorified air mattress that you inflate and deflate based on the firmness you like. I hated it for the first 40 days, after that I've found a good number that works for me (around 45 - 50).

2. If you are a hot sleeper, then you want a firmer #, because the more you sink into it, the more you feel the heat. It's not as bad as the tempurpedic (sp?) body fitting bed... that one made me really HOT at night. This one is ok for that. But I keep my AC around 73-74 at night and make it through OK.

3. We got the adjustable base (you can raise the feet and the head) like a hospital bed. It's pretty sweet, but that thing is nonrefundable and it costs about 2500. I would recommend against getting it. It's heavy, hard to move and if you decide to return your sleep # bed after 30 days, you can't return the base. Plus, really... you can only spend so much time lounging in bed if you're healthy and busy with kids, right?

I'm so-so on it. I don't think it's worth the money we spent, but my husband absolutely loves it. I think that you can go out and buy a really nice Sealy and that will do the job.

You should go to the Sleep Number Store and try them out....

Good luck...
