TOTALLY OT - Front loader W/D

My dryer went out on me and both units are over 12 yrs old. So considering making the plunge into new front loader versions.

Do you have ?
Do you like?
Would you recommend?
What brand?
Anything I should know b4 shopping?

I have done a little internet search via consumer reports / couple of retail stores etc... but thought I'd get the info from the pro's!

I have 12 year old Maytag Neptunes - both washer and dryer. Average fifteen loads a week. Love the capacity (can wash my full size feather bed), the water efficiency, how long my clothing lasts and the wash time and dry time usually match.

No recommendations as they are so old, you can't buy them anymore. I'm told the newer versions have a better solution to the gasket seal. But won't ever go back to a regular machine. It's front loaders for me!

I have the whirpool duet and I LOVE my washer and dryer and I feel the same way as the other poster; will never go back to the regular machine.

The only thing I do not like about mine is my washer shakes to high heaven and gradually works itself forward and I have to push it back every so often. Mine is about 5-6 years old so maybe they have improved that aspect.

Good luck and have fun!!!

We also have the whirlpool duet-they are about 1 1/2 years old. The washer still shakes like crazy on high speed spin during a full load. But they wash & dry great.

Thanks for the input... I get a discount on Whirlpool thru a company program of about 40%...

My dear Dad fixed my dryer during lunch so I could get more wear/tear out of current!? ????

Decision time! ?

Don't know how big your w/d room is BUT the front loaders are HUGE and we have a very small w/d room so we couldn't really buy one and still get through the door.:-( I really wanted one but oh well. So my advice is just measure before you buy.

Love my front loader washer & dryer, they are LG Tromm and are about a year old. I have them on pedestals and they really make it easy on my back to load and unload. Mine are in my basement, so I don't hear them, but my salesman told me the pedestals add a lot of noise if the washers and dryers are on the main or second floor.

Are people that have the front loaders having mold issues? I've heard this can be a real problem and it's what is stopping me from seriously considering one. I've seen people say you have to leave the door open. But, we have 3 cats who would be inside in a heartbeat if we left it open. Their litter boxes are in the laundry room, so closing the door isn't an option.

I have Frigidaire Afinity. I also have a top loader in another part of the house. Although I've had no particular problems with the front loader, I have noticed that it does not clean the clothes as well as the top loader. I truely think the front loaders are a fad.

Oh yah by the way... we got a washer from my in-laws for a wedding gift in 1982. It was a JCPenny brand. We replaced it in 2001, that machine is almost caput so it's in the lower level laundry room... 19 years, not to shabby.....

We have a Whirlpool Duet set as well. I noticed someone asked about the mold. We do leave the door to the washer cracked, but I also use an old dish towel to dry around the seal and inside the seal after I'm done using it for the day. I also take out the detergent tray and wash it every other week. We haven't had any problems with mold.

I also vote for putting them on pedestals. Ours are on pedestals in the main level of our house, and once DH got the washer totally level (not an easy tasK) the washer stays put and isn't any louder than our former top loader. The pedestals are great because they also have storage drawers in them!

Our set is made by Samsung...I LOVE them. When we purchased them the sales person mentioned the mold and explained how our washer was designed to prevent it. Please do not expect me to reexplain it...but it has to with the material around the rim where the door seals shut. Anyway...we do not have mold issues. One feature I also like is a cold water sanitizing mode...saves on hot water. We technically do not ever need to use hot water to sanitize the laundry again. I still do on occasion though.

We also have ours up on the pedestal drawers. The drawers are great for storage and it makes it much easier to us the machines. My bro and his wife do not have theirs on the pedestals. I ended up sitting on the floor to do laundry at their house...not very convenient.

All in all...I LOVE mine. We have had them for a little over a year or so.

I have a Kenmore Elite which might be made by Whirlpool. I love being able to set the washer to start in the morning. It is done when I get up and I throw the clothes in the dryer. I don't keep the door open when not in use and had what looked liked mold for the first time a few weeks back. When it spins it is very noisey. But it gets my clothes really clean. Much better than a top loading washer in my opinion. And I do a ton of laundry. You use less water and less soap.

My mom was ready to buy a pretty RED front loading and sales person talked her out of it because the parts come from Korea and it takes forever to receive replacement parts. Not sure which brand this was.

Pedestals are VERY important...otherwise they are really hard on your back/knees.

I do find the mold problem kind of gross...but if you stay on top of it you will be fine.
