OT: Questionable Mammogram

Hello everyone,

I am trying not to panic over my mammogram results. I also got the dreaded "call back" from the doctor's office saying that the test is incomplete and they need to do a 2nd mammo and ultrasound. Apparently, there is a new 8 mm nodule in my right breast. I have been going annually since 40 so this was my 3rd year. The Dr. office says they see this often and not to worry, but to follow up. Usually, it is all okay. I have the appointment for the new test on Thursday and I am so nervous. I can barely focus on anything and I am making myself sick. Have any of you had an experience like this that you can share? Are "callbacks" common like people are telling me? Thanks for any input you can give me.

Try not to worry!

Take a look at this thread from a month or so ago. On the topic of breast cancer, has anyone ever had a "suspicious area" found?

Many, many of us have been called back for follow-ups.

(((hugs)))

Hi There!
YES, call backs are VERY common! I have been a mammo tech for 12 years and I always tell the ladies taht it's just an extra step to your mammogram. It's great that you have been going annually and hopefully it will turn out to be nothing! Sometimes we do have to recommend a biopsy if it persists on mammo and U/S. Even if that happen try not to worry many, many breat biopsies turn out to be negative. Sometimes we can't tell from the pictures and have to send a piece to the lab.
Keep us posted!

I hope it turns out to be nothing

Laurie thanks so much for your reply. I can't tell you how much it helped me to read it. I appreciate you sharing your expertise with me! You made me look at it in a different way. I have to remind myself of what you said over the next 36 hours so I don't start to panic more. Debbie thanks for referring me to the recent thread about the very same thing. It helped to read those responses too.

I also got a call back and go back in two weeks. I'm not worry about it unless they actually find something.

I have had two call backs a couple of years apart and both times they were fine the second time...they just want to take specific pictures of the area to get a better look. We have mamogram clinics for screening but the second looks are done at the hospital and more detailed. The worry is overpowering but you need to try to take your mind off of it at least for short periods of time as stress is very harmful to your body.

You have a mamogram yearly so even if there is something you have the advantage of early detection which is key.

Kind regards,
Dickons

I have been called back EVERY year for the last five years. Every year I panick when I get the call back. Luckily, it has not turned out to be a concern. Apparently my breast density seems to warrant additional mamograms.

However, this year I did not get a call back. So I panicked. Why didn't they call me back??? I called them to confirmed that the doctor who read my mam. was absolutely ok with it. They do send out a follow-up report confirming everything is ok.

Also, the dr. may not be reading the mam. at the time that's it done on the patient. So if the tech has not taken it at the right angle, or if it's not clear enough that would been a call back.

Please try not to worry and keep us posted!

The very first year I had a mammogram (for my baseline), I got the dreaded call-back. I was so worried and had my follow-up 2 days later...a long 2 days later. They were sending me to a different place where my mammogram could be read immediately. That did not sound good at all. I even took my husband with me, bracing for horrible news. When I went, they took more pics and then came out and said they needed to redo again one breast again. Finally I was cleared. I have dense breasts. It was NOT a pleasant experience but it happens alot (from what I hear.) I am sorry you are going through this and I pray you have good news in a few days.

Every Single Year.

I have learned to advocate for myself and demand the super squish because the regular mammogram doesn't cut it - it's only when they really clamp down can they get a good picture.

This year, I demanded to be put in the advanced center because I was tired of being called back all the time.

Please try not to worry - you'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
