Need help - Guatemalan craft idea
Help!
I'm working with a local organization that goes into schools and does cultural presentations/activities with kids to expose them to different people and cultures. They asked me to help with requests for Guatemala. My first "assignment" is Thursday. I had spent lots of time over the last couple of months creating my workshop that I could use with various ages. However, this week it's a cultural day and I only have 30 minutes with groups of 20-25 kids. I have 6 classes K-5. My original craft idea was creating little worry dolls, but the craft alone would take 20+ minutes. Does anyone have a simple craft (related to Guatemala) that little kids could do? Most of the other presenters are simply scaling back or not doing any craft-like activity, but I really hoped to have an hands on experience. Any creative people out there with ideas? Thanks in advance! Sara

One of my DD's favorite things from Guatemala is her "maracas"... and the kids would love that. Not sure if you could use things that are simple like popsicle sticks and rice or beans inside >????? just a thought?

"maracas" are called "chinchines" in Guatemala. They are easy to make, like Slatond10 said.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3259/...a59073d0_o.jpg you could also make mini-kites with popsicle sticks and tissue paper. They are called "barriletes" in Guatemala and are flown through the windy season (Nov-Dec) http://www.guate360.com/galeria/data/media/35/8.jpg |

Here's a Quetzel craft:
About.com: http://www.dltk-kids.com/animals/mquetzal.html It's a little last minute, but if you can gather enough worry dolls you could do a craft using them rather than making them. Give each kid a barrette or wooden circle and have them make a wreath or something with them. You could also show them the backstrap loom. Perhaps too hard to make in a short period, but you could make one and bring it with you and show them how it works. Interested classes could keep a copy of the instructions. http://bobscrafts.com/bobstuff/backstrp.htm
