I was outside with my daughter today and one of my neighbors comes up to me and say...."She forgot how to speak Spanish! You need to teach her and not let her forget!!" And her tone was not nice at all...I felt like saying that she NEVER spoke Spanish but UNDERSTOOD it. And she will learn when SHE wants to. And she was only 8.5 months when she got home. This lady I have been trying to avoid like the plague and every once in a while she catches me outside.

i will agree with this, too. i have had people, from latin backgrounds, tell me to keep his spanish up, and pronounce his name correctly, AY-LEE-US, not EE-LIE-US. lol. i really just think they were caring about eli....poor little hispanic kid being raised in a white family. i believe they were looking into his future, and seeing a kid go off to school/out in the world, without the tools he'd need to fit in with people who looked like him. i heard someone comment once that people would assume that eli will speak spanish...they will call him AY-LEE-US and speak to him in SPanish...and he needed to know A)HE was Ay-LEE-US and b)how to respond to people in Spanish. I think it was all very well meaning...in an odd kind of way.

I agree with the other answer....is she, herself, Latin? I'd have shot back with "I was hoping you could teach her!" I'm sure THAT would shut her up!

I have 2 hispanic neighbors both from Cuba, the older lady is WONDERFUL!! But this one thinks EVERYONE needs to speak spanish. She is the type that if you do not speak spanish you are being rude. Sorry English is my first language than Italian. DD is learning Italian and doing well with it. When she is in school she can learn Spanish CORRECTLY!! I am not going to mess up a beautiful language.

i think that is AWESOME that she is learning italian. You know in the end your dd will be trilingual...so just ignore your nosy neighbor. lol.

No matter what language your DD uses I am sure it will be a sweet as a button. She will have such a gift to be able to learn three languages I like the comment by Mommy2Eli about getting her to tutor her for Spanish...(Free) ....that is not a bad idea
