Potty training question

We have been putting our son on the potty just after meals now since Sept. and he'll poop almost every time. Now the last week (weekends and after work) we have been letting him wear the thicker underwear and taking him about every half hour to an hour depending on when he starts dancing around. He will NOT tell us he has to go and if we ask him he'll say no so basically we just take his hand and he'll come into the bathroom and he'll pee almost every time. I'm just wondering if we should just wait some more before we continue or is this how a person starts and eventually he'll just say yes and go? He's only had 2 small accidents since we started but that's with us just taking him. Thanks for any advice.

I think it all depends on the child. I potty trained my dd last month and she got it on the second day. I started with my oldest ds two weeks later and he still doesn't tell us when he has to go, but will go when we take him. If only they would all be as easy as my dd was.

I would keep up what you are doing...worst case, you save money on diapers. You could have a ways to go, or one day he may wake up and just "get it". Sounds like the connections are being made since your son knows what to do on the potty. My DD is just about at the same stage. She tells us sometimes when she has to go, but mostly we take her to the bathroom at designated times (i.e. after waking up, after meals, before going to sleep). Maybe slowly extend the time between trips to the bathroom...accidents are ok. I feel that helps them learn "when" they need to go. Our daughter does not like having accidents, so she definitely holds it better than before.

I also agree that every child is different. You have to do what is comfortable for your family. Good Luck!

I would continue. Eventually your little one will want more control over the process and want to determine when it's time to go. If he's already in the habit of going on the potty, then this step should come naturally. It can take a while for this ability / interest to emerge, but there are lots of positives to this approach. He's learning a lot about personal hygiene and such and you're saving on diapers / diaper washes and related stuff. It can be a pain to be on "high alert" as we must be during this stage, but personally, I prefer that to keeping the child in diapers.
