Sex offender charged with beating 2-year-old to death

A Cumming man who was a convicted sex offender has been charged in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son, police said Saturday night.

Christopher Brian Gilreath, 39, was charged with felony murder, aggravated battery and cruelty to children in connection with the death of Joshua Pinckney, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department.

• North Fulton County news Joshua was found dead in his bed Friday morning. Preliminary autopsy reports showed the child had suffered multiple blows to the head, authorities said.

The boy’s mother, Miriam Pinckney, was home when police arrived Friday morning, police said. Gilreath was taken into custody and was being held without bond on other charges in Forsyth County jail Saturday when the charges were filed stemming from the child’s death.

Gilreath also is charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and failure to register as a sex offender in Georgia. He is a registered sex offender in Pennsylvania, authorities said.

Joshua was adopted from Guatemala, police said, and was one of two adopted children in the household. The Georgia Department of Family and Child Services removed a 2-year-old girl from the home.

I agree....it's horrible!

It's also one of many reasons that as a single mom I can't seeing dating for a long time. How can you know how some stranger might treat your child? (I know it sounds extreme but it's one of my fears)

Please please please please for any single mom's out there. Always get a background check on anyone you are thinking about seriously dating. If they can't understand why you would want one then they are not worth it.
This is so so sad. I feel for this mother and what she must be going through right now. I can't even begin to think of the horrors this child and his sister experienced.

Suzy - I wish more single parents had those thoughts. I'm amazed as some of the men & women I see dating single parents and just immediately immerse themselves in the child's life.

When my Dad was dating my Mom... I never knew she existed until they were engaged! He didn't believe that children should be introduced until it was truly serious (i.e., engagement).

My birth mother didn't have the same idea.... her one boyfriend raped me, another one used my arm to sharpen his knife, etc etc etc.

It's ok to date but it's not okay to involve your children until you are serious and have done an extensive background check.

My heart is aching for that child.

I believe the perp lived in Tenn at least, where he was a sex offender, he also registered in PA
News reports say the mother and 'boyfriend' moved to GA from NC or SC? Not clear if the perp lived with her before that.

You have to wonder if violent behavior happened before it got bad enough to lead to the poor boy's death--it's almost always not the first time, when something like this happens.

TOTALLY Understand. I am a single Mom and don't plan on dating for a long time. But DD is so BEAUTIFUL, I won't leave her w/ any man by herself! Like u I might be a little extreme but this is a HUGE FEAR of mine. DD also LOVES Men and Boys. She will pass right by me and Nana to fly into Papa's arms and by her aunt to fly into Uncles arms. I trust these men w/ my life! But I still want a women present when she is w/ them. I was molested by a neighbor as a child and I just don't want anything to ever happen to DD!

This is horrific and my heart breaks for that child!

I'm a single mom & made a committment to my SON - I won't be dating until he's in his teens (In all honesty I have been on a few dates & had my neighbor run a background check - she's an atty. & they NEVER met my son) And I CERTAINLY won't move ANYBODY into my house (male or female)

Parents need to protect their chidlren - not invite registered sex offenders to live in their home. I used to get annoyed being asked who visits my home, who my friends are ect... to keep my fp license - now I see why it is necessary - some people can't seem to use good judgement never mind protect their children.
