Anyone on Facebook? I am new and just learning the ropes. Do you like/dislike Facebook?

There are lots of folks from this and other forums on facebook. I like Facebook. It's a good way for those that don't go to blogs etc. to stay in touch on an almost daily basis. My mom signed up recently so she is able to see all of her grandchildren's pictures in one place. It's a little addicting at first while you are searching for names. I have also reconnected with a few friends from High School that I haven't heard from since then.

I love Facebook! It is so addicting, but a great way to stay in touch with old friends and a also to make friends.

I am fairly new to FB. I was addicted, the first few weeks, now I am trying to figure out what is the point of it. No real conversations if you ask me, just a few blips here and there. I think if I ended my FB today, no one would notice. I love playing bowling buddies, and looking at peoples comments, thats about it. I don't find it particularly deep, just a bunch of surface stuff and people talking about themselves and their families. Many people love it, I am just trying to figure out what's the point of it other than being nosy of what everyone is doing with their lives. I am probably the exception

I love it! I have networked with lots of adoptive parents and love that aspect of it for sure.

I also enjoy the instant chat. I can chat with friends/family a little everyday more so that I might otherwise. (I don't like talking on the phone so perfect for me)

I have mixed emotions about Facebook. I have reconnected with some friends from high school and from my first home over thirty years ago(they found me). I mostly like the games. I find I dont really like all the top 25 things, bucket lists as much.
I do agree with JoshGuat that there isnt that much substance to it. When I first find an old friend, i will write them a private message to ask them how theyve been. That is usually the main amount of conversation I will often have with some of my less close friends. For the folks I really like and keep in touch with in my real life, I will still buzz then an actual email outside of Facebook.
Anyway, Facebook has made that guy Mark Zuckerman into a billionaire so there are definitely a lot of proponents and sponsors of Facebook out there.

I just attended a presentation the other night entitled "the Dark side of the Internet". As much as I know that there are creeps out there, it really hit home as to how vigilant we need to be with our kids online activity. The presentation was made by an agent of my state's Department of Justice who poses as a minor online and then ends up being solicited by adults. We recently had 2 major arrests in my community: a local mayor and an 18 year old high school boy who blackmailed other students (31 other boys!), some with sexual activity after convincing them to send him inappropriate pictures of themselves through Facebook. They thought he was a girl. You never know who someone really is online and those poor boys were victimized by that kid, all made easier with the use of the internet.

That being said, I do like Facebook for myself. It has helped me re-connect with several old friends. IMO it's use needs to be monitored for kids/teens.

I totally agree!! There are lots of great articles that explain how to use some of the security/privacy features that facebook has and I would suggest anyone that is new to FB to read up on the security/privacy settings.

But like with anything, even this forum, don't post anything you wouldn't want out there for anyone to see or know...

I was so opposed to Facebook for a long time, but finally joined and I love it.....HOWEVER......

I was shocked to learn alot of this (like the search engine stuff - creepy...) and after reading it, I changed alot of my settings for more privacy. I made "good friends" lists. Also be very aware of "tagged" photos. If you are tagged but don't have your settings correct, anyone can see those photos - even prospective employers, family members. I especially want to protect my children's privacy. It can be used to share info and photos with family members and friends, but you need to set it up that way and set your privacy settings.
