Question OT- Thyroid nodule

I have just found out that I have a very small thyroid nodule, and I'm a little concerned (at least it's not my kids!!) There's a strong history of thyroid issues in my family. My great grandmother had a thyroid goiter, my grandmother had a thyroid nodule that she had removed w/ part of her thyroid that was benign, and two of my aunts have enlarged thyroids. My initial thyroid blood work came back normal. I am going to see the endocrinologist on Wednesday. However, I'm just wondering how concerned I should be. Anybody have any experience with this?

Thanks
Tiffany

I have several small nodules (and a family history of non-malignant issues) and the endocronologist wasn't worried at all. I was given the choice of a biopsy or coming back for another scan in a year, and chose to come back. He assured me that it most likely wasn't cancer, but if it was, it's a very slow growing cancer and it's very treatable.

I was very glad I had a consult, and am totally comfortable getting another scan in the fall.

I have

I have had my thyroid removed because I had a nodule and the biopsy had abnormal cells. However, (not to scare you), but my hubby has Thyroid cancer. His cancer is rare, but his was more than a nodule. Looked like a goiter, but was a 9 cm mass. Main thing is that its just a nodule and if it would turn out to be thyroid cancer, it is one of the most treatable.

Please keep us posted,

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Thx,
Amy

Hi Tiffany,

I have a goiter and been biopsied twice in the last four years. Both times the results came back negative for cancer. I have an ultrasound on it yearly to make sure it isn't growing too fast. It is visible on the outside and turtlenecks are sometimes uncomfortable to wear. I figure I will have to have my thryroid removed one day; goiters run in my family. My grandmother had to have hers removed.

Sometimes when I have a cold, it is more difficult to swallow but removal isn't considered necessary right now. It bothers me sometimes because it is pretty visible, but not, I guess, enough to have it removed.

Please feel free to PM if you have any questions.

~Eva

I understand your concerns! My husband jut got a large nodule removed. It turned out to be a very simple procedure, he was back on his feet in no time. Seems thyroid nodules are quite common (we did not know this until his was discovered...). They removed an egg-size mass.

Best luck and prayers!
