OT: Tax Refund Question
Hi All,
We did our taxes using Turbo Tax and we got a really good amount back with the adoption credit, etc. We had it to where it would be direct deposited into our account. I am wondering if the amount is real high would the IRS send us a paper check instead of direct depositing the money? Does the IRS have a cut-off amount to what can be direct deposit? Thanks. Stacy

You might do some searchs for the this topic from this time last year. I know it comes up every year. From previous years discussion, it appears that there is an amount at which the IRS does not direct deposit any longer, but I don't remember how much.

I am not sure what the cut off amount is but last year we got back around $12000 and even though our tax professional had it set up to be direct deposited it ended up being mailed and we received a live check. If memory serves me correctly it took around 3 weeks from when we submitted and actually received the check. I think I remember others though with similar amounts who got theirs direct deposited. I believe the 'where's my refund' site should be updated within a few days for those that efile so you could check then. Last year ours initially said one date though and it was moved out a bit. So, I wouldn't trust the date too much.
I hope you get it soon! I remember how excited we were last year! We don't have a whole lot of the credit left this year but we are still excited. We get our taxes done Saturday!

I searched every word combo I could think of here as well as the IRS site, and can't find it. But as I said, it comes up every year that there are people utilizing the credit and getting a hefty refund then end up waiting for a paper check. Hopefully more people will weigh in with their experience as well.

Debbie,
I did the same thing on this site and the IRS site and came up empty handed. Thanks for your help. Stacy

It is evidently a secret!
I wonder if maybe it isn't a set amount but a large refund in addition to other factors that determine direct deposit or check and that is why we aren't finding anything.

I am not convinced there is an actual cut off amount because our accountant, who is very well versed in tax laws, truly thought ours would be direct deposited. I am guessing it is random. I remember last year having this discussion with people here and we couldn't figure out why some people got it direct deposited and some didn't.

Here's the IRS number, I'd just call them and ask.
(800) 829-1040, the refund line is (800) 829-1954. I can't remember what form they used for our refund - check or direct deposit. But just call them - they are much more user-friendly these days. Rachael

I just looked up our info from last year. It looks like we requested direct deposit, but the IRS sent us a check. And it was delayed - it arrived about one month after we efiled our taxes. Usually if you efile, the refund takes two weeks, so it took an extra two weeks.
Getting that check was the best feeling - hope you get yours ASAP. Rachael

I called the IRS and the woman I spoke with told me that there is no limit on direct deposit. If they can't direct deposit your check it's usually because your bank has a limit on what amount can be direct deposit and therefore they end up sending a check.

I spoke with H&R block about this since I wasn't given an option for direct deposit when I e-filed. Their answer is that anything over $9,999.00 will not be direct deposited and the IRS will send a check in the mail. The guy I spoke with said it's an IRS policy. I'm calling the IRS now to see if this is true since I've found forms on the IRS website that you can fill out to have 1 million dollars direct deposited (I wish!). I'll update when I get an answer from them.

We got our nice big refund (over $11k) direct deposited last year, I'm almost positive. It was also via TurboTax.

Just got off the phone with the IRS and they confirmed anything over $10,000.00 won't be direct deposited and the IRS will mail out your check. Hope this helps all of you.
