TB meds - pill or liquid?
Thank you to everyone who helped me sort out my earlier post about TB. Our daughter's chest X-ray came back clear (which is great news)...but they recommend the medication for 9 months anyway. I am so glad some of you have already been down this road (or are still going down it!)
I need help deciding on if it would be better to get the pills or liquid? Our daughter is 19 months. Any experience with both would be great. I don't know HOW I am going to get my daughter to take medicine EVERYday for 9 months! If I have to give her tylenol, its difficult..lol!!!! Is the liquid horrible tasting for the children? Also, when is the best time to give it? Mornings, or night? Just looking for any feedback. Thanks so much!

We didn't have the option of a liquid. Our local pharmacies and health dept just didn't have it. The pill was 2x per week. I crushed it and put it in applesauce or yogurt. Carolina has a great appetite so it was pretty easy to do. Good luck!

My little one is 19 months and we use the pill. Our county does not offer the liquid as an option because it has a nasty taste and can have side-effects such as diarrhea. I give my little one a 1/2 pill a day. I crush it and mix it with applesauce, yogurt or pudding. I give it at lunch just because it is so crazy in the am and the evening with my big kids. He has had no side-effects and takes it much easier than when I try to give Tylenol or Motrin. I think for him it is just a part of his lunch each day. I keep post-it notes on various kitchen cabinets to remind me to give the med each day. Once it is part of your routine it is no big deal. Good luck.

Giovanni has been on the liquid since September. My Dr. told me he wanted him to use the liquid. We told him it is banana medicine since the first day. He takes 3 and 1/2 teaspoons every day. We make it 4pm everyday no matter what. Also can I give a bit of advice. Use a calander and mark it off everyday. The first week I was going crazy trying to remember if I gave it to him. So now its 4pm, mark off calander, and I dont go nuts. G never had any stomach problems at all. He sees the infectious disease Dr. every other month. I also give him acidofolous (sp) everyday while taking this as well as a good yogurt.
Good luck and I hope your little one is OK. Patty |

The liquid contains sorbitol, which is a laxative. Most of the time, it does cause diarrhea. The majority of kids tolerate the pill better...like others have said, just crush it and mix it into a few bites of yogurt or pudding.

With both of my kids we used the liquid form...we too did it at 4:00 p.m. My son was really young so we put it in his bottle. My daughter was a todder so we put it in her yogurt. I found that if we gave them the medicine too early in the day they had more severe diarhea and if we gave it to my daughter with yogurt that helped with her stomach upsetness even better.

um...yes it does. eli had cramps every night after he took it, all night long...and he pooped all night long. plus, it was 4 tsps each day...and it tasted foul. it was hard. i begged the doctor to switch us to see if it would relieve some of the gas pains and diarrhea. and it definiltey made a difference. eli takes 2 pills crushed in applesauce now..and some times, he'll just eat it. i cleared this with my doctor in advance, and he said it was fine. it is SOOOO much easier to give him now, and so much easier on his belly. plus, the pill is cheaper. so i vote pill. ![]() |

Our daughter is 5 but only 37 lbs. We do a 150 milligrams twice a day in a pill form. We are fortunate she had started this routine while still in the hogar so she knows the drill and swallows the pill like a trooper! Good luck! Renee

I vote for the pill. We tried both with our daughter. The liquid was just too much to have to try to get down her. I would mix it with applesauce and have to make sure that she ate it all, which was a struggle most of the time. With the pill it was only a couple of spoonfuls of the applesauce and it was down.
Also my doctor said not to give it to her with yogurt because the yogurt works against antibiotics. She could still have yogurt, but just at a different time of the day. |

My son takes the pill form. We do every night at dinner since that is always a time in our house when there is some "order". He just turned 3. I used to crush it and put it in a teaspoon or two of applesauce. Now we no longer even crush it. Just pull the whole pill (one at a time)in a teaspoon of applesauce and it goes right down. Not sure about the cost as our State Department of Health CONTROLS the treatment for ALL cases and we must go there monthly for the meds. They check his weight, pulse, and blood pressure and hten give us the next month's supply. The medicine is FREE. I guess maybe each state handles it differently?
