"your little United Nations"....

I recently send out an email to friends and distant family that my husband and I started a Nepalese adoption. You know what comment keeps coming up? "You guys will have your own little United Nations". Now, why is that comment already getting on my nerves? This is really not offensive or hurtful, but for some reason I think it is such a stupid thing to say.

OK. I vented and feel better.

Oh, I feel that way about my home. I think it's nice that your kids will have exposure to international diversity right in your home, and I suspect that's the source of the "UN" comment/compliment. People always feel they have to say "something," right? Don't let it get to you - it could be a lot worse.

i agree. i don't think people mean to be hurtful...but what do they say to something they don't understand? recently i've realized, i don't know how to respond to people when they talk about their pregnancy. some pretty stupid stuff comes out of my mouth...but it is something i don't understand or know much about. i really should learn to be quiet. lol. someday, the people who comment about our families will learn to be quiet too.

The only other time I have heard this was in reference to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. I remember cringing a bit inside when I heard it.

This is a comment made routinely to my family, 13 people, all different races/ethnic backgrounds. Just take it in stride. Smile and say that you love your racially diversified family. People with the UN comment are realy your friends. They are most likely just in love with your diversified family. Anna

I've heard a similar comment to this and I just chuckled, I thought it was funny.

I have a white son and a black son... My "white" son is actually part Mexican and part Native American... My friends have told me that my next child should be of an Asian decent so that I will have a little United Nations going on in my home.

I laughed, I saw humor in it.

(More than likely the next child I adopt will be black or Hispanic since that's the majority of the children that are in the DSS agency I'm going to foster through.)

I started before the Jolie Pitt thing happen so I haven't ever gotten asked...

BUT I also have respect for Jolie and Pitt and what they're doing.... Heck if I made as much money as they do I'd probably adopt a lot more children too

My sister once told me that I was Angelina without the lips and paycheck and with a few extra pounds.

I think I would have preferred United Nations.

I don't understand what's wrong with the comment. It makes sense to me.

OMG! Talk about a double slam.

It drives me up a tree when people tell us, "Oh, you're just like Angelina and Brad."

Ummm, no we're not. For too many reasons to list!

I think this is people's way of saying they support your family. The UN is a combination of people from around the world who come together to try and make the world a better place, right? I think they are genuinely happy for you.
