Slightly OT: We're going to Moscow!
We just received the
 phone call from our agency!  We started the process to adopt again (this time from Russia) several months ago. We finally got all of our paperwork in and BOOM! They call and tell us we have a referral and we have to be there on February 1! We leave here on January 31. OMG!  I don't have the room finished yet and we don't have any furniture! Of course he won't be home until probably March (if we're lucky), but wow this is moving sooo much faster than I expected! Now, how do I prepare Madelyn (who just turned 2) for a new little brother?  How do I explain to her that this little boy is coming to play and NEVER going away? I can just see her getting tired of him and trying to push him out the door. LOL. Like, "ok, you can go home now." dawn

Congratulations! That is wonderful news! It's hard to explain anything to a 2 year old (lol). It might take some time for her to adjust to him, but I am sure she will come around! Have a safe trip!!

Congrats!
I used a book with my daughter called "A sister for Matthew" about a little boy whose family adopts a sister from China. The text was too much for a 2 year old, so I ad libbed and talked to her on her level about what was happening in the book and talked at the same time about mommy and daddy going to Vietnam to get baby brother. She got to the point that she would go get his referral picture and hold it while we talked about the book. I cried the first time she did that because it was so precious. It also made her much more aware of her own adoption. She frequently tells people now that mommy and daddy flew to Guatemala to get her and that she used to live in Guatemala. She will then tell that brother is from Vietnam. I also got her an Asian baby doll to play with and used her playing with the doll to talk about brother coming. She had a rough several weeks when he first got home---I won't lie, but they get along as well as any brother and sister their ages do now.

Feb. 1, 2007 - this is really getting old!! 3rd visit trip Feb. 1-4th Feb. 21st and we still don't know what KO#2 is even for?!?!?!? Guess it wasn't a KO after all!!!!!! Feb. 22 OUT OF PGN!!!!!!!! March 26th 2007 leaving for extended pick up trip! March 29th - Happy 1st Birthday Kate!!  Home forever on April 27th!!!!!!!!!!!!! Praise God!!!

That is such fantastic news ~ congratulations!
We had a year to prepare Ana for J's arrival. During that time we constantly talked up how much she would be able to teach the baby and what it meant to be a big sister (reading stories, holding hands while walking, etc.). We also showed her lots of pics of J during the entire adoption process and read her children's books about having a new sibling. Ana took to J like a 'duck to water'.

Congratulations....so this is your trip to meet him, not to bring him home? Is that correct? I would show her photos when you get them and tell her how important being a big sister is and how she will be able to do things her new little brother won't. Kids adjust just fine. Have her help you prepare the rest of his room, maybe have her add her own 'touches' to the room. Have her help you pack. Everything you do just explain fully in language that she will understand.
Tell us more about the referral - age, name, etc...so exciting.

Congratulations!
My youngest actually arrived first, so I couldn't "prepare" Zack for his sibling. There were some rough patches at first (Zack trying to push Clayton off my lap!) but now they ADORE each other. They are two giggling fools... chasing after each other, hugging and kissing. Two peas in a pod.

Our daughter took about 3 weeks to adjust to her baby brother & now they adore each other. I'm sure it will be fine:-) keep us posted:-)
