Did it occur to anyone that what she is just describing the man???
If the police had come out they would ask the basic question of race. Why is it in a culturally diverse country some immediately assume you are racist if you describe skin color in a conflict situation but it is ok it is in a non-conflict situation?
We have had to call the police several years ago for a break in and they not only asked specifics about race but also skin color!
Saying a "young white male" didn't qualify. They asked me about complexion.
Statements about skin color can be just observations and not racist.
She has been scared and IMHO rightfully so. Why do we have to bash her and call her racist?

Just an observation, I have been on this forum for several years and quite a few of the responses were from names not usually seen on this board, why is that?

Like another poster mentioned, I have been asked which child is mine and I have described her as the one with the long brown hair, or the one with the long brown curly hair..but when I say the chubby one, most people know which child I am talking about....does this make me anti chubby people? I hope not since I myself am chubby. We use words to form a description of someone or something, they are not meant to harm, just to describe something.

The poor woman had a big scare and was looking for support and she got bashed. She was alone with her two young children and was feeling threatened in her own driveway. It was a gut reaction and have we not heard "better safe than sorry" or go with your instints? None of us live in her neighborhood so we cannot say what is unusual for her area. I know in my neighborhood a young black male would stand out, racist? No, just a fact, it is not a very diverse area so it would raise questions. How sad that it seems we live in a world where everything has to be beige so no one will get offended by a description.

I hope you all can sleep well tonight knowing that you have made someone else feel terrible and that you have acted unkindly towards her.

Mary Ann has been on these boards for a long time. She has kept coming back and giving support and love to the rest of the families who are still waiting and aching for their child. Tell me of ANYONE who has ever heard her say a bad word about or to anyone. Anyone that has had any contact with Mary Ann would know that Mary Ann is NOT racist in any way shape or form.

Should we describe others and include the color of their skin? Maybe...Maybe not. We teach our children to be proud of the color of their skin and as adoptive parents some of us have several children with several different skin tones, how are we supposed to encourage them to be comfortable in their skin if the only color we are allowed to describe is white skin?? Doesn't that send them mixed messages?

I think more evil was shown by those so quick to jump and make assumptions and pre-judge anyone who makes an innocent comment. If she was to go to the police department would she refuse to describe him in full for fear of how it would look?? Of course not, but you wouldn't question that.

I agree...she is an amazing person who has always, always offered her support to everyone on here. I, too, find it SO interesting when other members who have not been around a long time or I have never seen before on here post and call someone out that they don't even know! I hope she knows how much we love her here. I am sure she is really hurt by some of what was said.

The OP was very rattled and did not run her post through the PC filter before submitting it. So what?

I've been (wrongly) called racist and lots of other things here, but this is ten times worse, because this person came to us for comfort at a scary time and this is what she got.

To those who were so critical: some people look at a black person in a non-mixed neighborhood and subconsciously think "why." But YOU look at a word in print such as "black" and scream "RACIST!" Who is worse? If you have ever been seriously called a racist, you would understand it is not an accusation to be lightly made.

But since people want to continue to attack I will say this... don't make a judgement about what she meant.
I know her and she has done NOTHING but be here for this group. If you want selective support than fine. If not then get off the PC trip.

I don't know if you are even reading this anymore... I just wanted to say I'm sorry for how people have treated you on this forum. I see nothing wrong with your OP and am sorry that you experienced a scary moment like that. I am frustrated by people's willingness to JUMP on someone who came here looking for support.

I think people who jump on the "racist" bandwagon so quickly have a chip on their shoulder waiting to be knocked off. We need to be more sensitive and supportive to posters. I saw NOTHING racist in the OP.

I hope the scary guy doesn't come back again -- and I pray you feel safe at your house tonight!!!!

First of all I did not find this thread at all racist. If it was I that was posting this thread I would of said the same thing.

Sorry that you are going through this. Keeping you and your family in our prayers for safety. Our neighborhood also has been targeted with a lot of crime (Mind you we live in a private gated community). We plan on starting a crime watch for out neighborhood. Please stay safe and be aware of your surroundings.

Way to keep the thread going after she appologized for sounding that way and explained her intent was not to sound that way. You are out of line for even continuing on this course of the conversation when the OP asked that it stop and already tried to make "others" feel better about how and what she wrote.
