Working from home...

Hello Forum Friends, I noticed on a few threads of people asking advice on balancing their time with their kids (which I can relate!) that many of you responded that you work from home. I am wondering if any of you that do work from home might be willing to say what you do? I need some ideas! I also work from home when I can but my job is not routine and I could be anywhere at any time which is just not working for me...Thanks!

i work from home occasionally so i'm not 100% virtual, but some people in my role are. i do internal consulting and management for an hr firm. a lot of it is project management (curriculum design/development) and people management that i can do from anywhere.

it's extremely convenient to be able to log on from home and not have to travel because of snowstorms!

some employers are very picky and even if you are able to work from home, they won't allow- all depends on the culture of the company.

I agree - I also work from home one day a week. (I'm part time and only work three days a week) I could work from home more then that if I needed to.

I also work in consulting (HR consulting amazingly enough) and I can do my job virtually.

It is very nice. In fact, tomorrow is the day that I work from home. This allows me to get Alex from daycare much earlier then most other days.

I am a tax consultant in a specialized field. Most of my clients are in distant cities, and I'm not the "face person" in any case. I'm a partner in a small firm and the other partners are close friends who knew going in how important it is for me to work at home as much as possible. I do have to attend meetings in person about 2-4 days a month.

My job involves financial modeling, accounting, advising on and documenting compliance with tax laws, legal research, stuff like that.

I'm jealous! I wish I had this as an option. With my job, it would be EASY to work from home a few days a week. Bummer that my boss doesn't embrace this concept!

I do program evaluation and training around evaluation for non-profit and community-based organizations. Some of my clients are local while other are in other states. The amount of face time needed depends on the project. I work independently so all of my work is out of my home office.

I am a Training and Developmet Manager. I don't work at home full-time, but am allowed to one day every other week. Could you talk with your boss about an every other week arrangement?

I tutor online for a very large, I think the largest, tutoring company. I have been there for 3 years and I really love it. I only work 2 hours a night but I could work a lot more if I needed to. The only drawback is that I am live with my students and wearing a mike/headset, so my kids really have to be quiet. Thank goodness for Toy Story! I am in my office and the kids are in my room and I block off the hallway with a gate so the only places they can go are those 2 rooms. I work from 7-8 and so when my DH is still at work that arrangement works well for us. Not ideal, since they still come in to bug me, but ok. Everyone works from home, so everyone understnads the limitations. My other hour is from 9-10 and they are sleeping. Makes for a looooooong day, but I will not have a huge hole in my resume if I should ever decide to go back. And, I can contribute financially, which is nice!

I am in sales. There are a lot of sales positions that allow you to work from your home office. I am out about 3 days from about 9-3 (maybe an hour of computer those days, or more once kids are in bed). Then I am home the other day. I can get Thomas by 4 the days I am out and I usually try to get him after nap one day at about 3 the other day.
I was forced to make a change bc my last employer was SOOOOO family UNfriendly. I was back at work THREE days after flying home with Thomas. I was devasted.

I am a lawyer working for a state agency. I work from home two days a week. My kids go to preschool in the morning those days, but then I have them in the afternoon. Also my husband and I stagger our schedules so I work from 7-3 and he works from 9-5:30. It means that one of us is with the kids more of the time.

Good luck!

I cleared it out, but just to let you know, they aren't hiring right now. The main time for hiring is late summer and early fall.

I work from home full-time answering a crisis/suicide hotline. I also have my own Etsy store selling adoption related gifts.

I absolutely love working from home though I'm still trying to find that balance. I don't know how I would do it if I had to get two kids to daycare/preschool and then go to work.

Good luck in your search.
