Also a single mom here that travels at least 4 times a year w/ a young one. When he was just over 2 (& probably till he was 3) the airline let him sit in my lap during takeoff & landing - I paid for an empty seat. We used the extra room during the flight for crayons, coloring books ect... Since he's 4 now he uses the safety belt.

I used the seat belt for Becca, but kept alert since she was very small.

I'm single mom too....flown lots of time since coming home with DD who' almost 2.

Always done extra seat....and no car seat but CARES sytem. I agree that I cannot see ever lugging car seat on plane (I checked mine to go visit family). CARES is great for my DD......but at christmas with all the rush I packed diaper bag without it so DD just used lap belt & was fine.

I still intend to use CARES for turbulence (for crashes I agree with other poster....there is nothing we can do in seat to help except sit close to exit row....if can't do that, don't be in absolute back....).
