1-2-3 Magic

Has anyone read this book and used it on a young toddler? If so, can you give me some thoughts on ways you have "tweaked" the book ideas to suit you? I am amazed that this seems to be working excellent with my 17 month old, I've been using for 2 weeks now. I have only had to count to 2 and he stops, even with a tantrum. Here's the thing though, not sure what I will do if he gets to 3, lol.

Any thoughts?

I really like 1-2-3 Magic. I have used it when teaching parents how to parent toddlers. As for what to do when you get to 3. I always used a timeout. Have a specific place for time out that is free from distractions/toys/tv. Time outs should be 1 minute for every year so your son's time out would be 1-2 minutes. I used it with my nephew(6yrs) and to this day I usually only have to say one and he stops whatever he is doing. Good luck!

Thanks everyone!

Do you use a chair or something else with a little one 17 months?

Ditto!!

No special chair when the boys were 17 mos - just on the carpet in the hallway. Now if I say, "One..." they answer "Two" and stop whatever they are doing. It is awesome!

LOL. My little one holds up 2 fingers and then stops! Too funny! Thanks for the advice. I just wasn't sure where I should put him should I get to 3.

Thanks again everyone!

123 Magic

I got the book for Christmas for myself. One of my friends swares by it. I have always admired how well her children listened to her and her husband. I just starting to use it with my son who's 29 Months.

Hope it works as well for us as it did for them !

I also want to mention that the video is very good also and quite funny. Some people might find that easier than the book. We run a workshop for parents where I work and we show this video and have a discussion time. I use a version of it with Malea.
Another thing that works well for Time outs (or sit time as we call it) is geting a piece of carpet that your child needs to sit on. This can be moved anywhere and also taken with you if you go somewhere. I know for us it is hard to find ONE place in the house that would be a good place for Time Out so we use this carpet piece that can be placed where ever it is quiet and away from distration.

1-2-3 magic is great and I've also heard great things about Love and Logic.
Both can be found here on the internet and have weekly newsletters.

I walked into daycare one day and the teacher was laughing so hard she could barely speak.

Apparently she was trying to get the kids onto the carpet and no one was listening to her. Dylan stood next to the teacher with his hand on his hip and started counting the other kids out. It was too funny!

I keep hearing about this book but have not bought it. But I have already found myself counting to three, as my mother did before me. We get 1 to 2 and rarely get to 3 and if we do then we know where we are sitting, on the carpet by the front door with no distractions.

I'm reading that book right now. It makes a lot of sense. I did the countdown this morning when DS was whining for his milk ( as I was pouring it for him ). He didn't stop whining so I put him in time out. Then at lunch we had a similar situation where I was getting DS his milk I told him to sit nicely and no whining AND HE DID! No anxious whining! I didn't even have to start counting. I feel like I finally have found something that works.

It depends on your kid. It works great on my 2yr old but when my DD (now 4) was little she would just scream "NO counting!" over and over...time outs didn't work for her either, she loved the attention. The only thing that did work was time...waiting until she turned four

Thanks for the replies everyone. I am entering week 3 with this book and it has been fantastic for me. I have yet to get to 3! I agree, you have to find what works for each kid, my oldest could be grounded from a favorite toy and she was dying, never do it again. My middle could be grounded or timed out forever, could have cared less. It took us a long time with him. He is 10 now and has actually been the best behaved, go figure! While I don't agree with some of the older kid suggestions in this book, it is working quite well for the toddler.

Thanks again!
