I've read some posts by people who had a difficult time getting a social security card for their child, because the people at the SS office were uninformed and/or unhelpful. And being the worrywort I am, I was nervous about this. So I am thrilled to report that I had a GREAT experience!
We decided to wait to get a SSN for DS until we added his middle name as part of the readoption. But I dragged my feet doing the readoption, and didn't get a hearing until Dec. 22. We finally went to the SS office on Wednesday afternoon. I brought everything I could think of: original Guat paperwork, California readoption paperwork, COC, all our passports, etc. I was a little worried because we don't have our CA BC yet, so DS's middle name isn't on his BC or COC. But his readoption paperwork clearly states that his previous name was D_G_ and his new name is D_G_G, so I hoped that would be fine. I didn't even have a chance to sit down before our number was called. What, no waiting in a government office?! The guy who helped me was extremely nice. Their computers were down, but he took photocopies of whatever we thought was necessary (the CA readoption papers, COC. Guat BC that listed us as parents, and my passport). He said he'd call me on Monday (after the computers were up, and a higher-up could look at the paperwork) to let me know if anything else was needed. Well, it's only Friday, and he called first thing this morning to say, "I wanted to give you the good news that you'll be receiving a social security card for your son in a couple of weeks." SUCH a sweet guy! SoCal parents: I went to the Van Nuys office, and the great guy who helped me is named Tony. Woo-hoo! |

That's wonderful Jennifer! It's always nice to have a step with NO snaffoos! We didn't have a problem with this step here in Kentucky either! It was ONE thing we didn't have a problem with and for that, I was grateful!
Best of luck to all those waiting for your precious little ones! One day all these hurdles will be crossed and the race will be won! Jeanne

That's great! Just curious, did you have to have your son with you? I am going in this week to get our daughter's SS# and wondered if she needs to be with me. Thanks!

Trish -
DH came w/ me and he sat w/ our son in the "waiting area." But I don't think either of them had to be there. The social security person didn't even look at DS. I read a post the other day by someone who said their social security office made them bring their child in, but lots of others said they didn't have to. Sounds like each office has a lot of discretion. Good luck! |
