OT: Tamales

I want to make tamales this year at Christmas. We live south of Pittsburgh and we don't have a strong hispanic population. I found a website called mexgrocer but was wondering how reliable it was. Or if anyone has any other suggestions on getting the supplies (corn husks and maseca corn) to make them. Thanks for any help you all can give me.

Cooking Light has receipes for tamales in this month's issue and MexGrocer.com is who they recommend for ordering hard to find ingredients.

You might check out their receipes too. They are the first tamale receipes I have seen that I wasn't totally intimidated by!

It would be realy nice if you can find the fresh prepared massa. It tastes better and is so easy to use. This would be the time of year that stores that normally do not cary it might have some. It would be in the refrigerated section in a plastic bag. We probably will not be making any this year but we normally do. It is the Mexican style we make though as those ingredients are easy to find in our area compared to the Guatemalan ones. Anna

Have you tried going down to the Strip district during the day...I know that's when they have alot of the ethnic grocery stuff available. I have order from Mexgrocer before and they are very reliable.

Edited to add here are a couple stores in Pittsburgh...

Veracruz Mexican Grocer (Semple St Pittsburgh 15213) (Beechview Ave too)

Global Market (132 South Highland Ave Pittsburgh, 15206)

Just as a side note.... Guatemalan tamales are usually made with banana leaves....
I have found banana leaves at both of our whole foods around here....

I have a recipe from False Tongues and Sunday Bread (a FANTASTIC cookbook btw) that is very simple.... I have made tamales now for the past 3 years for Christmas eve.
This year we are having tamales, beans, plaintains, and guava cake.
