OT: Anyone have their uterus removed?

Hi All,

I am 34 years old and will be having just my uterus removed in January. The doctors have decided to keep my ovaries and cervix since all my problems stem from my uterus. Has anyone just had their uterus removed and can tell me their experience? How long was recovery, how much pain were you in?

I have two toddlers and am pretty scared about recovery.

Thanks.

Stacy

check out my blog posts in may of '07. and i'll pm you my email address and phone number.

if you're worried about recovery i would see if they can do it laparoscopically as the recovery is MUCH easier.

sometimes docs say you're not a candidate to do it this way and then it turns out they are just not that experienced with the procedure. consider also keeping your cervix if they can do it and your hyst isn't due to any kind of cancer.

talk to you soon!

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the pm's and encouragement.

I have had 5 surgeries in the "private" areas leading up to this one. The drs. are hoping to do it laproscopy and if they aren't able due to the scar tissue/endo/my uterus just really being messed up then they will cut me they might also be taking the cervix. They said that if it is laproscopic it be one night stay in the hospital and about 2 week recovery. If they cut me then it is 3 nights in hospital and about 4-6 weeks recovery, really depending on how I handle it.

Dulce will be home 4 months and I am really worried for her. She is still super clingy to me and she co-sleeps with us and I also have Marco. If I have to stay a couple of nights in the hospital I am worried on how she will be. Should dh bring them to visit?

Luckily we have a wonderful support system with extended family so I know we will have the help we need I'm just more worried on what it will do with Dulce and her bonding.

I had just my uterus removed laproscopically 3 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did!! Just be careful and don't do too much too soon! If you have got help take advantage of it. The first couple of days I was in bed and pretty out of it but after that I was able to move around easily. That was the problem though and I did too much too soon and ended up bleeding. The dr. said bedrest for 2 days if the bleeding got worse or didn't stop I needed to go back. Thank goodness I didn't but it was a wake up call for sure!

Good luck!! Renee

I had mine removed a few years ago. The best thing ever! Mine couldn't be done lapro. I was in the hospital 4 days. My doc offered me the extra day and I took it, knowing that I had a 4 year old at home. I"m a single mom, so I took advantage of the extra day. It really helped!

I would play visiting the hospital by ear. I did not have my son visit me. I bought him a little gift for each say that I was in the hospital. I also spoke to him each day. I actually felt great after it.

I had to have my ovaries and fallopian tubes removed in June. They used the same incision. This was considerably more involved, as I had a lot of scar tissue to be removed also.

But, I don't regret either operation. I felt so much better, it's amazing.

Hey...this is Pat from Lab Corp...I am actually out on Medical leave right now from a total hysterectomy...took everything...
I was so surprised on how well I feel...I have had no problems what so ever...Alittle sore but nothing major...You have to remember though it takes longer from the inside to heal , just because the outside is healing good doesnt mean the inside has healed yet..I still have a few pains and I dont walk as fast right now but I have really been doing well...They are keeping me out of work til Jan 5th,,,6 weeks and I think thats the normal time frame, and I work 3 jobs and expect to be able to go back to all of them then...

Hi Stacy - I can't offer any words of wisdom, but I just wanted to say we'll be thinking about you. Take good care and yell if you need anything from a sort of local friend.

I had mine removed when I was 26. I had three kids then ages 5,3 and 1. I honestly think that even though I didn't have a choice to get it out, it didn't work out well for me. I still get all the PMS symptoms only now I get them worse (I still have one of my ovaries) and I also get what feels like hot flashes. Not trying to scare you, everything is really fine, but it was not a walk in the park like it is for some people. I did, however, get it done while I was in college full time (with the three kids) over a winter break and started my classes back up two weeks later. I was really tired for the first few weeks, but recovery was really not that bad.
