Thoughts Needed: Tubes - DD Needs them

Anyone's babies had these put in? I've heard it's very routine and quick - more stressful for the parent! I'm not worried at all as I've been hoping she would get these done - I don't think she could take another ear infection and get doped up on antibiotics again. DD is on her third ear infection is as many months and is a prime candidate for tubes. Wanted to hear your thoughts....

Thanks!!

loved em! middle son had them about 6 months, and again after he turned 2. they were a dream. the procedure was not a big deal, he had no recovery period....other than he couldn't walk for a few hours bc of the drugs used to put him under....but nothing a few movies on the couch couldn't cure...then he was fine. he complained of no pain...and then his ears were so much better...and i REALLY loved flying with him with tubes in bc he was not effected by the air pressure changes. lol. the worst part was years of using ear plugs in pools and tubs. bc of that....he does not like water in his ears....so he still cries if i get the tiniest drop of water in his ears....even though his tubes have been out for some time. i want to put him in swimming lessons, but i don't think he'll go under water without plugs. lol....that's really been the only down fall so far.

In spite of the unseasonably cold weather in Atlanta recently, Thomas has not had the nasty runny nose that our other 3 and everyone in daycare has had. Thomas seems healthier than EVER and he has had them now for 3 weeks.
Downside - maybe I am an idiot, but how do you wash a toddler's hair without getting water in his ears??? He has plugs and an "ear bandit" to cover his ears, but bathime has become stressful for me. Before tubes we loved bathtime, now it seems a burden.
All of this said...after an ear infection a month for 7 months, we had enough!!!
I say GO FOR IT!!!!

My daughter suffered for many years with constant ear infections and colds. Finally, last January she had her adenoids out and ear tubes put in. Let me just say it was the best thing to ever happen to our family. Jessica has not missed one day of school this year and usually by Thanksgiving she is out more than in. Other than the occasional runny nose she has not been sick at all. Both procedures for us were a blessing. She didn't have any problems with either procedure. Once the drugs wore off she was fine.

Our middle son had constant ear infections for 6-8 months. He had so much fluid in his ears that he couldnt really hear us. He was not talking.

Had the tubes put in....

No more ear infections!!!! He began to talk up a storm a week later!!!! No problems with the tubes at all! In fact, he was eating in recovery, took a short nap at home, and was up and at em that afternoon. Didnt miss a beat.

If she needs them.... I'd say to get them. They do seem to help.

Mia had an ear infection when we brought her home and continued one after another for 4 months straight. We had tubes put in 5 months after coming home and it was so well worth it. Her tubes have since fallen out but luckily we haven't had anymore infections.

After several months of non-stop ear infections, my daughter had them done last March. BEST thing that ever happened to our family. She was HORRIBLE during the night when her ears were bothering her......and the pitch of her scream, yikes!!! She was fine within 3 hours after the surgery.

you can use freak all you want here. lol.

and to answer thomas' mom's question about not getting water in the ears of a toddler while washing their hair....here was my secret....be very careful. lol. but really....for the tub, ds had plugs that were fit to his ear that we bought at his doctor's office.....then i laid him down .....while holding his head in my hand, or in only an inch or so of water, and just washed soooo slowly, covering his ear with my hand or a towel while using a cup to pour the water. for years, i only washed his hair once or twice a week bc it was so hard. i'm serious...i was so careful, that he still expects to not get a single drop of water in his ear. lol. good luck...just be S_L_O_W...and you'll be fine.

Yes!!! Tubes are the best!!! DD had several ear infections and we put tubes in this past Spring and she ahs not been sick since. They are a miracle!! I asked my doctor about ear plugs and swimming and she said the ear drum is so small that not a lot of water actually gets in the ear. She only recommended plugs if Elaina was going to swimming in a lake. Good luck!!

Tubes are small miracles. Spiderman went from 10 ear infections in 10 months (or one long one that lasted 10 months) to one ear infection in two years!
He got them in December so by the next summer they had fallen out and he could swim.
No problem with hair washing -- he just learned to take a "big boy shower" instead of a bath.
