Te Amo, or Te Quiero?

I tried google'ing the differences... but it still makes no sense.

Which do you say to your children, which to your spouse? Or are both acceptable?

My Honduran nanny uses "amo" with the girls. I learned "quiero" in Spanish class, but I am not sure whether that is specific to a romantic relationship.

My father, who is from Mexico, always signs his letters/notes to me with "de tu papa que te quiere mucho." I don't really remember growing up using "amo" much.

My DH, who is Chilean, prefers to use "te amo" with me and/or the kids, but does say "te quiero" now and then. I prefer "te quiero", but learned Spanish as an adult with a Mexican influence.

Our Guate friends seem to use "Te amo" for the children. I'm thinking that this might be one of those things that in many countries might not make a difference. I'll have to ask them specifically about the difference.

I say Te Amo to the kids and my husband. My Peruvian in laws use Te Quiero. I believe my husband used to use it but I always use Te Amo.

My Guatemalan parents used "te amo" for each other and "te quiero" with us. I do the same.

When I met DS for the first time in Guatemala I asked the facilitator's boyfriend ( who was Guatemalan ) how to say "I love you" to DS and he told me "te amo".

Hi I am from Colombia and both words are aceptable. I tell my kids te amo, or te quiero mucho. to me the words can be used to tell them how much you love them.
