Eczema Help

DD has eczema and I put on hydrocortisone nightly, but it has been lingering for months now. Has anyone had success with something different?

I found using Vanicream and Eucerin to be the best. Our boy developed a horrible case of it when we came home due to the climate change He was an itchy mess everywhere from head to toe. Poor kiddo. These two lotions where are saving grace. It took 2 times a day applications every day for two weeks to get it to go away.

If you have further questions please ask.

My dd age 11 has terrible excema on her arms and legs. Our experience has been that you need to keep switching up the creams. We did hydrocortisone 1% then had to go to 2%. That stopped working and I bought a generic lotion for excema at our grocery store (literally called excema lotion) which has been working amazingly well for almost 4 months (knock on wood). Of course moisturizing after(not too warm)baths and even more than that helps immensely. Our ped also told DD to drink lots of water to keep her skin hydrated. That's worked so well for her that she can only have juice or soda if her arms are looking good. Once they start getting red and itchy we can tell she's been slacking on the water consumption.

Aiden has excema so bad that he bleeds all over. We have found that Cetaphil soap and Eucerin lotion works really well for him.

I agree with the others, Eucerin and Cetaphil have worked best for us.

My kiddo also had problems with a dry, flaking scalp. The best thing that has worked for that is olive oil. I rubbed some on his head about 1/2 hour before his bath and then washed it out. Did it only twice (once a week for two weeks), and it all cleared up. Plus he thought it was great fun.

We've been seeing a dermatologist for Gabe's eczema. Here is what we do:

1. Cut way back on baths. Make them short in duration and not too hot. We usually use Cetaphil soap. Immediately after getting him out, pat him dry lightly and then immediately use either Eucerin or Lubriderm Extra Dry lotion.

2. We wash all his clothes and linens in detergent without dyes or fragrance. Don't use dryer sheets, instead use frangrance free liquid fabric softner.

3. When he has a "flare up" of any kind we use Desonide Lotion 0.05% (by prescription) twice daily followed by Eucerin/Lubriderm

4. When he doesn't have a flare up we just use the lotion twice a day (and after baths)

The Desonide is awesome. Works like a charm.
We used to use Hydrocortisone creme but it thinned his skin too much and never really worked all that well.

His skin pigment has changed. He is blotchy...pale areas where the eczema was, but the dermatologist said that his pigment will return to normal over time...assuming we keep his eczema under control.

We use Gentle Naturals Eczema wash and cream. We have only needed the hydro-cortisone a few times and only in spots since we started with the Gentle Naturals products. Also no scented products, and only bathe when every few days unless REALLY DIRTY! I wash his hair more frequently. NO SANTIZER GEL the dermatologist told us or antibacterial products. They are too drying to the skin.

Does anybody's kiddo's have it on their scalp? Eva's started on the back of her neck and arms but now that has cleared up and it is really bad on her poor little head. She gets scabs all over it. I've been putting hydrocortizone cream but it only works for a few hours.

OK I think Jagger has it and I can't get it cleared up...I took him to the DR...but the prescript they gave me is not even working. He has White Spots all over his skin and a red, white and pummping spot on his little rear end. He does not scratch but the spots drive me nuts.

When you all say your childs has cleared up...do you mean like gone all together??? I don't think we will ever get there. He did have it on his scalp...but I changed his shampoo to Avenno and it went away on his scalp.

Where do you all buy your lotions at?

our son had bleeding weeping severe eczema when he came home. we control it 100% with diet and essential fatty acids.

he is off of dairy, soy, wheat, and corn. if he doesn't get these foods he has NO eczema (we also give him very high doses of fish oil.)
if he gets these foods we can see the rash returning within hours. we are hoping he outgrows some of these sensitivities as he has already outgrown his reaction to rice (thank goodness!)

before and after!

After a week or two of twice daily medication (Desonide) his skin will be "normal". For the most part, if we are diligent about following the rules he rarely gets a new patch. Occasionally he will start to develop a new patch and we start with the meds. If we catch it early it takes less than week before you can go back to just lotion.

Both my guys have a lot of food allergies so there may be some connection there. Stress can also increase flare-ups and I think that is also a contributer.

DS is struggling with a rare type of eczema that occurs only on his feet and occasionally the sides of his hands. He has a prescription steroid cream called Cloderm that we are to use only during outbreaks. The rest of the time we use Aquaphor several times a day on his feet. We also cut down baths to every couple days and try to avoid his feet getting too hot as this tends to cause it to flare up on him. I also use fragrance free detergent and softener on all of his clothes and bedding.

How did you know to do these things? Do you have to get an allergy test done first?

Kate has a dermatologist appt. in the morning for suspected eczema so I will let you know guys know what he says.
Her symptoms are itchy skin (sometimes) mostly at the base of her back, quarter-size crusty patch on scalp and some behind ears, fine "bumps" all over her, but they seem to be more prominent on her knees and one shoulder blade, and she also has this rather large, irregular white mark on the back of her calf. The white mark I have been told by ped. was eczema, but I am worried it is vitiligo. I read about some type of skin fungus it could be too so we are having it checked out.

Hydrolatum - it's what I slather on my boy after bathtime - it's less greasy than Aquaphor and I put a white t-shirt over it. I let it dry out a bit on his legs before putting on pants. And yes, I was his clothes in fragrance free, everything free detergent and cut down on his baths, especially in the drier winter months.
