Random OT Skunk issues....
This afternoon I came home to an interesting smell. My dh had been at the hunting camp, and somehow my sweet dog met a new friend. Mr. skunk. According to dh, he thought the dog smelled "fine", so he brought him home and left him inside. Seriously. Then he went BACK to the camp for another night. Yeah...left the stinky dog. So....i took the kids to the store and got two economy tomato juices. Then....i hauled my dog and 164 oz of juice into the shower. Uggh. I really hope this works. And....I may have to beat my husband. Uggh.
Now the kids are sleeping, the husband is gone, and I'm enjoying the lovely odor of wet dog. Well...better than wet skunk I guess. ![]()

Bummer! Some years ago, a skunk family found a hole in our foundation and decided to live in our basement. It was cute to see them walking in a line from "their" house - they would all look in the window at me like, "who's that in our house?" Yes, they were so cute to look at. All the same, I was anxious to figure out an eviction plan that wouldn't involve angering them. Well, the neighborhood stray cat beat me to it - a fight ensued - little "Odie" not only sprayed, but crawled inside the foundation "somewhere" and died. Our basement was condemned for at least a month.
So I blocked off the hole and all was quiet and comfy for some years. This year we have a new hole and a family of raccoons. Have tried everything to scare them off - even a continuous stream of conservative talk radio. Maybe I should try the liberals on them. Does anyone know if raccoons lean right or left? Anyhoo, good luck. I hope the tomato sauce works for you! I've heard good things about it from a friend whose dog got "skunked" regularly.

Our dogs seem particularly interested in skunks. If the tomato juice doesn't work the vet told us to make a mixture of Dawn dishwashing liquid, hydrogen peroxide and water. Wash the dog and rinse. The vet also recommended Pert shampoo after the peroxide mix. It helps quite a bit, although everytime they got wet for the next few weeks they would smell "skunky."

My dog has been sprayed a few times. All of them usually seem to be at 11 pm or 3 am UGGGHHH!!! I feel for you. As a home remedy we use baking soda, peroxide, and dawn dish soap. Make it into a paste and then put it on the dog (avoid eye area) let it sit for a few minutes then rinse. That usually takes care of some of it, enough to let him in the house. Then we bought some stuff called skunk off (off ebay) and used that when it got to us. I bathed him several times with that and by 4 or 5 baths you can barely smell it.
I read the tomato juice doesn't really work just masks the smell but I hope it works for you!

Mythbusters had a show on removing skunk odor and they found the best remedy was baking soda, peroxide and liquid dish soap. I've put this mixture on a cat urine stain in my carpet and it worked (after a couple of applications). There is a product advertised on the radio called Zorbex that is supposed to be amazing at removing odors. I don't know if it is safe for animals, or if I spelled it right either, but it is worth a try.

I agree on the peroxide, baking soda and Dawn dish detergent. No tomato juice! My dog got skunked TWICE in three days - UGH!!!
The thing about skunk spray is that it's an oil-based substance. Dawn does the trick!! "Dawn takes grease out of your way". It totally works. I bathed my dog in my son's plastic kiddie pool. Washed her in the soda, dawn, peroxide mixture, first(check online for exact formula - avoid the eyes!!!). Then, re-washed her in only Dawn detergent. Remember to use clean hose water so you're not rinsing their head with the peroxide mixture. Seemed to do the trick! Also, the earlier you bathe them, the better. If it gets into their skin, it's harder to remove. The Dawn made her coat super shiny and soft, too. Good luck! KC |
