Anyone familiar with a sleep disorder clinic?

We finally decided that enough was enough with the sleep. Our pediatrician concurred since we have turned over every possible stone (ear infections/colds, cosleeping, sleeping alone, noisemakers, adjusting bedtimes, teething or not, adjusting naps, you name it...)and unearthed nothing.

Anyway, what is it like? The ped. briefly said that they give you monitors that you hook up to your child while they sleep. I can't imagine that she'll sleep much with something like that on her. LOL she doesn't sleep well to begin with!

Just curious if anyone has experience.

Thanks,

I recently just completed a sleep study. I did have to spend the night and they hooked all kinds of things up to me. They did an EKG to monitor my brain. They hooked things up to my eye lids, they monitored my breathing and listened to my snoring, they had something around my stomach and chest to help monitor the breathing, they had things on my legs to check for leg movement. And they had a camara on me to watch all my movements. It was hard to sleep with all of that on. Come to find out I do have sleep apnea, I would stop breathing about once every minute. Very dangerous, no wonder I was tired all the time. I never did get into a deep sleep. Now I get to sleep with a mask, it has really helped. I'm kinda surprised. If you have any other questions please ask, and good luck

Hi! Antonio did one here in NJ at the local hospital. He had it done in September. He arrived with my husband around 8pm. The hooked him up from head to toe with leads. I have a picture if you want me to send it to you? They covered his head in a net. The room is like a bedroom. My husband had a bed/chair next to him. They brought snacks from home and then by 9:30 they put lights out. At 6 am they woke them up and sent them home. He said Antonio was actually very good about the whole thing. They were very surprised. He did cry when he had to actually lay down and sleep. His whole body was covered in the leads. In a week they gave us the results. They thought he had sleep apnea. He was OK except that they said he kicked his legs 15-18 times per minute. That could be amnemia. He was then tested for that and was OK. He is seeing a pediatric neurologist. He was 2 in July and does not speak. His hearing is perfect. He just does not speak. Let me know if I could tell you anthing else to ease your mind. Oh I did not go to settle them in. The hospital suggested that. It was really hard but for the best.

My son had this done at age 2, we thought he would go crazy and rip all of the electroids out, but he did great. It took a good hour to get him all hooked up and then after that I think he was so stressed and tired from behaving that he pretty much fell asleep. In our case our son work up every 2 hours, like normal and our problem, but when the test was over the doctor said he was perfectly fine, no sleep problems.... um no, I don't think so, I almost punched him, I don't think it's normal that he wakes up screaming every 2 hours 5 or 6 times a night, every night. Good luck with your test, your daughter will do great.

We had one done for our daughter when she was 3. We got to the hospital, and it was WAY past her bedtime. I think she finally got to bed at like 12:00! I laid in bed with her because she was pretty freaked out. They woke us up at like 6:00 am so needless to say we were exhausted the next day. They found out my daughter had sleep apnea. She had her tonsils out shortly after. HOWEVER, it didn't fix the issues we have. My daughter is still very tired all the time

My daughter had a sleep study this past Sept. She is 5 and very high strung. She did well with the sleep study. I slept in the same bed with her. Turned out she has sleep apnea and is now scheduled to have her tonsils and adenoids removed in Dec. She will have another sleep study done in Feb to see about improvements. If surgery doesn't help, the specialist has a back up plan.

Good luck...I know we need it!

Arthy - I see you are in PA (but not sure what part). If you are in the Philadelphia area, I have heard wonderful things about CHOP's sleep clinic.
