Scary Day---mrsa!!

Olivia went through a surprise surgery today because I took her back to the ped. to have a bite on her inner thigh looked at. Well imagine my surprise when i was sent straight to the hospital where she was admitted and went through surgery to remove the lump!!
She was a real trooper though in spite of the fact that they gave her IV meds that she had a reaction to and it took multiple times to get the IV in!! I did get some great photos of her that are posted on my blog!
Anyway they say she may have MRSA and we're waiting for the result to come back! She's home sleeping right now and has been running around like she's feeling better so I'm hopeful!!

Info on MRSA

I am a Grammy on this board (6 grandkids - 2 from Guat.). Just thought I would pass on a bit of info. My husband (in his mid 60's) had an infection in his nose (had progressed near to his brain; could have been very serious) a couple of years ago; had surgery; it was MRSA. Our dr. was very informed about this. Many of us are carriers of MRSA, but we do not even know it unless we get some kind of infection. They tested my husband thoroughly after the surgery because they had been treating him with a couple of anti-biotics which did not work. Now they know the 2 types of anti-biotics which will treat his MRSA if he ever has another problem. That seems to be the key to know what type of drug will take care of this type of infection. Keep us posted on her progress. Vicki

Sorry you had to go through this!

I'm a pediatric ER nurse and there isn't a shift where I work when I don't see MRSA abscesses. It is amazing how much more prevalent they are.

If your child (or you) has something that looks like a "bug bite" to you, but doesn't itch like a typical bug bite, GO SEE YOUR DOCTOR!! And, definitely resist the urge to squeeze it. These things are crazy infectious and need to be treated. It totally is not related to cleanliness or anything like that. Just as the previous poster said, staph can be found anywhere.
