Leaving in 2 days, I have a couple of questions

My son has very sensitive skin and his foster mom asked that maybe I could bring some special diapers for him, size extra large. What does this mean? I didn't think they made diapers for sensitive skin or anything like that. Also, what is extra large? He is 16 months old, about 29-30" and 24 lbs. I was thinking a size 4 diaper.

What is the best and cheapest way to call to the U.S. from Guatemala. I thought I remembered reading that the Marriott (where we will be) has pay phones in the lobby where you could use a calling card?

We're getting very excited but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed at how much there is to get done at home before we leave. I want to come home to a clean house so I'll be cleaning all day!

Red face

I think Huggies contain a special ingredient to keep the skin nice. Seventh Generation has chlorine free diapers that are supposed to be good for the skin.

Size 4 or 5 should be fine. My daughter is 28 lbs. and has been wearing size 5 for a while.

How about some Aveeno or natural products (powders, creams) to help his skin? My daughter has eczema/sensitive skin.

Not sure if this is the best way, but we contacted our cell phone company to "hook up" the international calling option on my husband's cell phone.

Have a great trip!

I used Huggies for 2 of my older kids because they got rashes from other brands. Also, maybe he has a bad diaper rash and the stuff she is using isn't clearing it up. You could stick a couple different brands of diaper cream in the bag. Have an awesome trip!

I would definately put a couple different diaper creams in your bag. From my experience, the diaper rash cream my foster mother used wasn't very effective. Flora's little bottom was very red and the cream was little more than lotion. I did get some at the Marriott that was good.

This is just what works for my son.

He has been on SOOO many antibiotics for ear infections...and the medicine gives him runny poop which gives him rashes!!!

I have tried all kinds of creams and "butt paste" or the OVERNIGHT desitin are the best we have found for him. I use size 5 Papmers cruisers because they are the softest on the inside (at least to me) and if you have a sore bum, soft would matter!!!! They are more, but he does better in those.

Also, the cheapest rate I found for a "calling card" was at Calling Cards - International Calling Cards - Prepaid Calling Cards - Phone Cards from diamonte. You have to call an 800 number so maybe it won't work while you are but once you come home if you need to call Guat it is very reasonable.

Happy Travels

Heidi - I am so excited for you! I too was going to suggest diaper creams since he may have diaper rash. I know John did when I picked him up.

And there are pay phones around the corner from the front desk that accept calling cards. At least there were when I picked John up. Hopefully someone who has been there recently can chime in.

I think the 4's will be fine for your son. The diapers there are sized by S, M, L, XL. I would take the Huggies because I think that is the only "major" brand that they have (I might be totally wrong on this)

I also agree with the "butt paste". That is what we used and I liked it the best.

As far as the phone... The cheapest way to go is to by a cheap cell phone when you get there ($25.00 or so) It will come pre-loaded with minutes and if you need more you can buy a bunch more minutes for little to nothing... If we had more time I would have sent you ours that we bought there. It has been a great toy!

Have a great trip!!!

This is exactly what we had luck with, "Butt Paste" and Pamper's Cruisers worked for DD's sensitive skin.

sensitive wipes

Hi - You may also want to get the wipes that are for sensitive skin. I think Pampers and Huggies both have them. I use Huggies because they are thicker, but both help with sensitive skin.

Hi. 7th generation diapers and wholefood brand diapers are the only diapers my daughter was able to wear because of her super sensitive skin. Still to this day almost anything I put on her skin she reacts to. These too brands use a different poly filler (not sure of spelling) than the name brands you find in the stores. My guess is FM must have tried pampers or huggies already? I remember seeing those brands in the stores in Guat. DS's FM used the least expensive brand of diaper and it was very fragrant and he always seemed to have a rash problem. As for diaper rash....I used this for my DD's sensitive skin: Balmex Daily Skin Protectant with white petrolatum. It is for all over use and prevents diaper rash. It goes on CLEAR. It is hard to find sometime and I have found it at Bartell Drugs. The other diaper rash treatment that works well and recommended by DS pediatrician is to take "Triple Paste" (I buy the 1 pound jar and it is not cheap - almost $30, but lasts months and months) and buy some triple anti-biotic cream. The triple paste is sticky so when you have to wipe a poopy bottom that has diaper rash you end up not having to wipe off all the paste off and so you aren't wiping a raw bottom. You alternate which item you apply first a couple times a day. Ex: in the am you use the triple paste first and then you add the anti-biotic ointment on top of it. Then in the pm you switch the order. And then in between just use the triple paste.

the seventh gen diapers are great- and no icky chemicals or chlorine (!) size 4 should fit.
they also make wipes, no additives etc.
and we use WELEDA cream. hypoallergenic and guess what...no chemmies!

Congrats on picking up your baby!!!!
I would suggest taking some hypo allergenic diaper rash cream and some green diapers. We used a calling card and took our computer so we could email everyone.

Enjoy your trip!!!!!!
