Ergo--help me decide!

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to decide whether or not to buy an Ergo baby carrier. $105 is a lot to spend and I'm worried I won't use it enough. Miranda is 11 months now and weighs around 21 lbs. I have a Moby wrap and a Playtex Hip Hammock that I don't really use that much. I use them mostly from 5pm-6pm when she's fussy. A lot of the time I'm trying to make dinner, so I thought the Ergo might be helpful, because she can go on my back.

I use the stroller a lot when we're out and Miranda seems to do fine in it.

Anyway...can you all give me some positive feedback about your Ergo that might help to convince me to buy one? Any examples of great times that you've used it and been really thankful that you have it?

Thanks!
Michele

I'm contemplating this too although we haven't picked our son up yet. I think he'll be about 16 months when we pick him up and probably about 24 pounds. I have heard that the resell value is high so if you buy one and it is in really great condition when you are done using it, you may be able to get almost as much as what you paid for it like on ebay or craigslist. I'm anxious to hear what others say as well!

IMO- worth EVERY cent. Our daughter is almost 2 and I STILL put her in it when we are out and about or I am doing chores and want her close. She gets excited when I take it out of the closet and often falls asleep in it! hth!

I'd say buy it. I bought one when David was 15 months old. Although I did not end up using it very much, it did come in handy when I needed it and I just sold it on craigslist for $80. They go for more on ebay but I figured with the fees and the hassle, it was easier to just sell it on craigslist.

worth every cent
you can sell it when you're done, for sure

we use it
-when j is spinning out and needs to calm down
-when j is tired and needs to rest
-if we're out and about and i don't want to have to be pushing the stroller (if he wants to get down and walk i just keep the ergo around my waist and don't have to worry about where the stroller is, etc.)

I have to confess that after 18 mos old we basically stopped using ours - at that size it was only comfortable on my back and I personally found it awkward (or really more effort than worth) to get him in & out when on my back. But it was great until then. I gave ours to a close friend who had a baby but I do understand the resale value is high. Of course, you can check on e-bay or craigslist to buy a used one to save a little up front.

We love ours..even though we don't use it as often as we did when our ds came home at 7 months. From about 7 months until 15 months, I wore him for bonding, putting him to sleep, church, travel. Now we use it on occasions and we wear him on our backs. We just used it at the zoo a few weeks ago. But the airport is the best. A month ago, I was running through the airport with ds on my front and a backpack on my back. He was laughing the whole time. And yes we made our flight!!!! I can see keeping it for a few more years and then selling it. My dh said it was the best baby item we have ever bought. It was great for bonding!

I would say buy it! I didn't buy ours until dd was over 18 mo. I only use it on the back position because she weighs 32 pounds! I can wear it for a couple of hours without much discomfort. I use it when I go grocery shopping or shopping at all, dd likes to run around or be held so it is easier for me to carry her on my back. Worth every penny and I bought the insert for the infants too for baby #2.

Not only is it worth every cent (because it's COMFORTABLE and kids LOVE them), but you can re-sell it on Craigslist/Ebay for nearly what you pay for it. I used mine with my nearly 3 year old and she loved it. I recently sold it for only $20 less than I paid.

I love the Ergo on my back. My son is 22 pounds. I do not like it for the front carrier nor the side. I can carry him for a very long time on my back without discomfort. You may want to post and ask someone on here if they are not using it anymore and want to sell it to you. I bought one here and got it for less than retail.

I did not buy my ergo until my daughter was 18 months old and got too big for the sling carrier/hip carrier. She came home at 8.5 months old and 24 pounds. I switched to the ergo and I STILL use it. She is a little over 3 1/2 and is 40 inches and 40 pounds. I am a single mother and just can not carry her for long on my hip. Can carry her a really long time on my back in the ergo. As she has gotten a bit older, I find it so easy to get her in and out of. Here are some times I use it.

-going for a hike or long walk and just do not know if she is going to make it the whole way. Just throw it on my back just in case.
-going to a place like the aquarium where the exhibits are up high. She still gets a little nervous in places like this and feels much more secure and enjoys it more in the ergo.
-going apple picking, walking the beach or hiking where you can not push a stroller.

It folds up neatly in a knapsack. I keep it in the trunk of the car. We are big fans!

I use my Ergo almost every day for my 31 pound DS. I usually carry him on my back (while I walk my dog). I will warn you that it takes a bit of practice to get the hang of using it on your back, and the child has to cooperate.

I also used it on the front a few weeks ago when he had a cold and was really fussy. nothing else would calm him down, he just kept crying and crying ...until I put him in the Ergo and took him for a walk. $105 is a small price to pay for an instant way to soothe a crying child. (and it not bad carrying a 31 pound child on the front either).

I LOVE the Ergo! I haven't used my Moby wrap since we got the Ergo. I used it all the time when DS first came home. I use it less now that he walks, but we still both like to use it sometimes for the cuddle factor. He's 18 months and about 19 pounds, and it's still comfortable for both of us. I bought mine on My Favorite Baby Carrier | The Ergo Baby Carrier Specialists, which has a 90-day money back guarantee. I would suggest you try it, and if you don't like it or find you don't use it enough to justify the cost, just return it.

Red face

Hi Michele,

My daughter is 2 1/2 and almost 30 pounds and I just bought one. I love it. She is disabled, so I will be carrying her around for a while. It's totally worth it.

Go to Happy Mama Essentials - Organic and Wild-Grown Essential Oil Products for Mamas and Babies.. It's $92, comes with instructional DVD, and she offers free shipping (on orders over $85). The woman who runs the company is super-nice. I think she will thrown in some free homemade essential oil.
