Question Readoption/recognition in Washington State

Has anyone done this to obtain a state birth certificate? Did you file yourself or have an attorney file the paperwork? Any info is appreciated.

Yes, both times. We also hired an attorney and were very pleased with him both times. The first time was straight forward, but the second included an age change which he handled very well in court.

We were going to use an attorney, but did it ourselves. In the end I was glad I did it, but during the process I wish I had an attorney do if for us. Not as stressful. If you still have questions please feel free to PM me. What county do you live in? We are in Pierce County!

Re-adopted twice in WA. Don't waste your money on an attorney. I assume you are in King County? If you pm me your email address I will email you the packet and the forms, and some additional instructions. It does mean that you will have to make a trip to the courthouse three times. Once to file the initial paperwork and get authorization to have the first post placement report done. Then a second time to file post placement report and ask for a court date (which you get to choose). Third time for court hearing. After court hearing you have to file some more paperwork and then you can purchase additional copies of the re-adoption certificate and Birthcerts. I got a couple birthcerts. In the future if you ever need another WA birth cert for your child you have to go to Olympia as Seattle will not issue BC for foreign born children. There is a lot of paperwork to complete and file, but compared to all you had to go through for the dossier you can do it on your own. And can always contact me if you want help filling out the forms.
PM me your email address and I will email you what I have.

I've done all three of my readoptions in WA. In February of 2008 I readopted my twins and did it all myself. It was easy and the courts helped me through it a bit. I was in Clark County (Vancouver WA) at the time. Let me know if I can help.

I called our county clerk here in Whitman (eastern WA) and she assured me that the only way to do a readoption was to hire an attorney... Just lazy or have the rules changed?
