Question OT: Speech Development

Giuseppa had her 2 yo check up. The doctor was so amazed how she was counting and singing her ABC's. Anyway for her height she is 25 percentile and her wieght is 3 percentile. The doctor is not worried because she looks and acts healthy. But the doctor asked me to go back in another 6 months. I was confused cause I thought her next appointment would be at the age of 3. Well I asked the doctor why in 6 months when the chart said at 3 years old. She proceeded to tell me she thinks Giuseppa is advanced!!! She thinks Giuseppa is at a 3 year old level of speech and wants to see where she is in 6 months from now. Has anyone gone through this and what was done when they are this advanced....by the way Giuseppa is a leftie.

TIA

Rose

I am not sure why at her age it would matter if she was advanced and why she would want to see her in 6 months but I would check with your insurance to make sure another well baby visit would be covered. I know after age 2 my insurance company only allows 1 well baby visit per year. I wouldn't want you to go and then have to pay out of pocket for it!!!

She may want her to go back in 6 months and watch her because some children who are advanced become bored very easy and it can affect them once they're in school!! Just a thought!! Seems like you had a wonderful visit!!

If you have an early intervention program in your state, you could ask them to come out and evaluate her. There should be some agency that evaulates kids 0-3 yrs old. They should do a developmental assessment and a language assessment. The agency in my area was very supportive. My now 5 yr old needed speech therapy at 2 yrs old, but my now 3 year old was very verbal and there was never any hint that she would need assistance.

They (agency)said to evaluate my younger daughter at 2 and then again right before she turned 3 because they wanted to assess her rate of progress. They wanted to make sure she maintained at least a year's worth of progress and see if it was more to get an idea of where she was. It was pretty interesting.

Just a thought and a way to avoid medical charges and insurance hassles. (in my state, the evaluation is free, the services are on a sliding scale, some covered by insurance and the remainder by the parent)

Good luck!

We recently had Zack's 2 year appt and had to make another appt in 6 mo.

Our dr said it's a new recommendation (to have an appt at 2 1/2) by the Board of Pediatrics to keep on top of autism (since it often develops around 2).

Hi Rose -
we ran into the same thing, particularly with our now 3-1/2 yr old son - he is EXTREMELY verbal, could count, sing abc's etc waaaay early. Doc never had us come back because of it but she always comments on his skills. (When we went in for his 3 yr check up, she wanted to know if he could count to ten. I asked her, "would you like English or Spanish?") I'm not sure what it is, because it's certainly not my or my dh's doing! Both our kids (Lily will be 2 in Nov) are very intelligent. Not saying that to be snooty, just saying it in amazement! Fair warning about a verbal child though: I just wish I could turn him off once in awhile! He chatters NON-STOP from the minute he wakes up to way past when he should be sleeping....

I don't know why it would matter if she were advanced? Why they would want to see her again? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense but I am not sure. By the way that is AWESOME that she is doing so well!!!! Also, she may not stay a leftie. Kids are still interchanging between hands at this point so don't rule it out that she may still switch to right-handed.

I know Mikayla has to be seen at 2.5 but that's because of all of her medical issues and developmental issues.
Hugs

As mentioned above, there is a new push from the American Academy of Pediatrics to do a developmental screen (especially focused on autism) at two and a half. Good advice to make sure your insurance will cover it, since it's not uncommon for insurance to lag behind new recommendations!
