poll: has your child ever tested positive for tb?

i've seen so many kiddos test + lately....and i think there are probably some others that just don't talk about it...so let's do an anonymous poll. remember....polls are anonymous....i can't see who voted what. promise.

if you want to discuss it...feel free to do that as well. last week i took eli to the dentist...and they almost didn't see him without first speaking to his physician. lol. the dentist seemed scared. in the end...he deemed it safe enough to allow the hygenist to brush his teeth. (it was the only procedure planned for the day.) lol...i honestly understood his trepidation, but it was still frustrating.

you can vote for as many options as you need to, but you can only vote for each option once.....if you need to vote for the same option more than once, and would feel comfortable pm'ing me telling me where to add votes, i can manually add votes to any of these categories....and i won't judge you. my kid has tb.

I only voted once, however, all three of my kids have never tested positive.

That said......our pediatrician practiced in Guatemala and upon his suggestion, we didn't test our children until they were over 2 years old. The exception would be as long as they didn't show any other type of illness that would have him test them earlier.

Also, two of my three had the BCG - one did not (was born at home by a midwife).

Interesting poll....

positive skin test

My daughter had 2 skin tests when she came home in 2004. They both came back negative (she had 2 because the nurse messed up the injection!!!!). Then this summer she had to have another skin test to enroll in Kindergarten. It came back positive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So I took her for the chest x-ray and it came back clear (thank God). So she has been on the Isoniazid for 2 months now-only 7 more to go!!!!!
They think it came back negative the first time(s) because it most likely was within 6 months of getting the vaccine in Guatemala. I never did get a record of when she got that vaccine so it's very possible.
I never even thought about mentioning it to her dentist, but it makes sense.

Do we have to tell the dentist? school? play groups? I do not mind but never thought of it.

you don't HAVE to tell anyone...a clear xray means they aren't active, plus, it is virutally impossible for kids to be contagious even with active tb...that being said, we started at a new dentist, and the form asked if they have ever tested positive for tb...and i'm typically a rule follower...so i checked yes. lol. i did inform a few groups/families we had been hanging around because i was unsure where eli was exposed....so i wanted people to know in case their children were exposed as well. it will be on your shot record....so if you go to enroll your child in preschool or something of that nature, those people will know automatically. i tend to keep it low key in our community, especially since eli is clear AND On meds, bc most people freak out when they hear tb and then don't hear the rest about how it is impossible for him to be contagious.

Okay, good, I feel better. To think, I was afraid to ask for fear I'd sound dumb.

yes.....i will...weird about not all of your kids getting the bcg...and i guess that will make another good poll....why would only some of the children receive the bcg. and what does this shot do anyway if it doesn't prevent tb?

edited to add: nevermind...i just read an article about the effectiveness of the bcg vaccine....which is apparently why we don't give it to everyone in the U.S. i guess a handful of our kiddos were the unlucky ones whose bodies were not phased by the vaccine. sad.

no flaming....she's young. most people are FINE in not testing until they are ready to go to school unless they've been exposed or show symptoms. the ONLY reason i had eli tested....twice...was bc i was having the older kids tested for school, and was just like why not? i'm glad i did because his first came back negative, and a year later he was positive, this narrowed the window of when he had been exposed and made me feel even more comfortable with thinking the positive skin test was not an allergic reaction or because of his bcg shot. you are fine...mention it to your doctor and they'll most likely test her at her 2 year appt just in case....but don't worry

I voted for Carolina, but not for Jesse. Could you add tested negative for him? (One thing I don't have to worry about with him, praise God!)
