OT: Creative Halloween Costume Ideas
I know it's a little premature I'm just not sure if I want to buy another costume like I did last year. I know there are many creative things to do, I just am not a creative person. If someone tells me an idea I think "now why couldn't I have thought of that!". Anyway, I'm sure there are many creative people on this forum. I have a 3 year old. What type of "homemade" costumes have you seen/done? We live in FL so it needs to be lightweight. It's still hot here on Halloween. Thanks!

I am thinking of making Sophia a ladybug costume. I am thinking it will be a black shirt and leggings (it is a little cooler here) and then a red tutu with black pom pom balls on it. I am not 100% sure but that is one in the running.
For my son we have done tons.... Last year he was Mister T that was the coolest ever! I have seen really cool and adorable scarecrows. I would google homemade halloween costumes and I bet you get a ton of ideas!

First Halloween DD was Deedee Doodle from the Doodlebops
2nd yr, she was just a cowgirl! I like outfits that are comfortable to wear and she will keep on for our activities. Last edited by Slatond10 : 07-30-2009 at 07:57 AM. |

the easiest one for a girl i have ever done was to buy the helium quality big purple baloons, blow them up and pin them all over her little dress, put a wreath of leaves on her head and send her off as a cluster of grapes. she got lots of compliments on her costume too.

Last year we did a family theme of The Wizard of Oz. Everyone in the neighborhood loved it. The costumes were easy to do. My poor sister wrapped herself in aluminum foil for the Tin Man. Jaden was a flying monkey. We had so much fun that we are doing it again this year and are thinking about doing Scooby Doo.

DD has been a black cat for a few years.
I bought a maribou boa and a small section of fake fur. I cut the boa into 2 3" sections and glued them to barettes in a V shape and clipped those in her hair. Two more cut and sewn into bracelets. The rest pinned on as a tail. I cut the fur into a circle and sewed that on to a pair of black fleece overalls with a black onesie under it. I've also seen some cute "Boots" costumes (Dora) with a gray fleece hooded suit and some sewn on red felt/fleece and tail.

My little guy was a bag of Jelly Beans last year. I used a clear trash bag, cut out leg holes and slit the sides so I could tie then at the shoulder then I blew up balloons part way and filled the bag. I taped a label on it saying Jelly Beans, his weight, made in Guatemala imported by the ------Family. I don't know how to do pictures on here. I have not decided what to do this year. Maybe, a pizza or dish of pasta.

Since the kids came home earlier this year, I'm putting them in brown sweatsuits (you could do pants and t-shirt in FL) and putting stamps and postage stickers (from Michael's, not real) and a packing label on them with our address. They're going as our special deliveries. I think they'll have fun putting the stickers on each other.

I reallly like the bag of Jelly beans Idea!! Might have to propose that to DD#1.
When she was 1 we made her a hula girl. Cut a styrofoam ball in half, and glued it to a tan shirt - with yarn as the bikini strings. Hula skirt over tan leggings. Lei, flowers in hair, inflatable guitar and a palm tree (centerpiece) in the wagon. We totally should have won prize in the local parade.... It was a riot. at 2 she was a cow - costume was $4 on ebay.... This year she wants to be Spongebob, but I am gonna mention the jelly bean bag - especially since we call her "Bean"!! Maybe I'll make DD#2 another kind of candy - a tootsie roll, or a lollipop, hmmmm, gotta think.... ![]()

Here are some of the ideas I have done in the past.
Take a brown grocery bag or box and cut a hole for the head and arms. Paint red and white stripes and add a "popcorn" sign. Then take a hat and hot glue real popcorn on it. My son received many compliments on this one. One year I bought green glitter felt material and cut out Christmas tree shapes with openings for their head and arms. I added garland, bulbs, and battery operated lights. They wore hats with stars on the top. They were very easy to spot that year! I took a box and added a curve of poster paper to the top to resemble a US postal box. I painted it blue and wrote on the sides. My daughter then wore a white pillowcase with a stick attached on the inside so that she looked like a letter. I wrote an address on it and then drew a stamp. I have five kids now and no one wants to do coordinating outfits anymore! |

One year my sister was a tube of toothpaste, it was so cute. Find a fluted lampshade to wear as a hat/cap, then make a felt dress and add the graphics of your favorite brand. Arms and leggs are free, so it's easy on the little ones. This year Owen will be a pirate, but I'm also thinking of dressing him up as Eddie Monster?

I love Halloween and always had creative costumes that my mom and I came up with. I went one year as a hammer (black sweat suit, Yellow sticker that said STANLEY on it and we made a hammer head out of cardboard stuck it on a box with one side cut open so i could see painted it Silver maybe for an older child). Using another box I was a rubix cube we used construction paper to make the squares. Statue of Liberty, sheet spray painted green flashlight with alum. foil to look like torch, book that I held in my hand (too cute). My sister was Mr T one year the funniest thing was my mom tried to put her sideburns on with Rubber Cement (Note to self, not a good idea causes Chemical burns, LOL I am still laughing she's not).
I'm thinking Energizer bunny for my little girl b/c it suits her!

We did the Adam's Family theme one year and it was so easy! We were able to buy things at the thrift store to make our costumes!!
I also seen some people do thing 1 and 2 for their kids from the Dr. Seuss story!! All you need is red shorts with signs saying thing one and two and blue hair gel!!
