I never really suffered from acne, but my brother did and he uses deep pore masks at least once week. It's funny to hear of a guy doing this but it has helped him A LOT!! He was also told that people think you need all sorts of soaps and cleaners for your face but his doc says plain on warm water and a clean towel works best. Something must br right because his face is clearing!!

Depends what kind of pimple.
I have tried everything on those monthly "hormonal" pimples. I give up. The only thing I can do is put benzoyl peroxide (Oxy 10, etc) on it and then it grows slower and hardens instead of becoming half as big as my chin. The regular every day ones? I mostly keep them in check by (a) washing with Aveeno foamy face soap daily with salicylic (sp?) acid (maybe 2x a day would be better), (b) using Aveeno face moisturizer with salicylic acid, (c) using an Aveeno soy cream with salicylic acid that is supposed to make skin heal faster, and (d) spot treating with benzoyl peroxide. At least half of the zits actually wash away with the foamy soap before they get a chance to be pesky. The oatmeal in the Aveeno products seems to help with that somehow. OK, now to get gross. Two less scientific things that help blemishes to go away faster: (1) toothpaste and (2) spit. Sorry, but you asked. I also don't eat chocolate and avoid fried foods; try to remember to wash hands before touching my face; and notice that if I wash my hair more often, I get fewer pimples. Good luck. I am so tired of zits. I am pretty sure they are never going away, yet I can't seem to learn how to love them.

I never had bad skin till 40 hit; must be something to do with hormones. The toothpaste trick is great and my fave is colgate paste. I also swear by Proactive products.

Yes, yes, exactly. They are HORRIBLE! The other idea - toothpaste is a good one, too - going to try that now. Someone told me to use draw out salve. Not necessarily a good thing. Yikes.....it is bigger. It is typically the monthly ones, otherwise my skin is pretty decent...usually. I tend to get one really "good" one every month and I want it to go AWAY! :-) Thanks you guys - keep the ideas coming. Last edited by shay7 : 08-28-2008 at 07:51 PM. |

I have lousy skin. A baking soda mask or scrub sometimes helps. Toothpaste helps unless I've already over-done the hands-on attack in which case it dries it out and ends up with a burn.
In the end, Neosporin works wonders and then I switch to Mederma once it gets to the dark-flat-spot stage.

Ask your Dr. for an antiobiotic. MY dermatologist gave me a supply of tetrocycline which I use for pimples (I rarely get them but when I do they were the size of an eyeball, lol!) As soon as I see it starting up I start the antiobiotic. Usually the next day it starts to clean up.
Also the toothpaste (white kind only) helps but not as fast as the antiobiotic for me....

I never really had many breakouts until late 20's. Now they seem to have gone away again (until the next hormone change)
I have used the toothpaste trick and a friend of mine swears if you have really red spot you can put Visine on it and it will temporarly take the red down. I don't see how this could work but she swears by it. I use face wash that has sulfer in it. It is a RX but I believe the proactive lines are sulfer based too. It made a huge differance. I use it when ever I start to flare up.

I actually read somewhere that Milk of Magnesia (sp?) works wonders. I bought a bottle but haven't used it yet because I'm just happy to brush my teeth and hair now b/c DD always wants to "help" me get ready in the morning.
I miss her so much during the day that I usually let her. As for night time I'm usually too exhausted to wash my face. I keep thinking some day I'll have time to do this again! ![]()

I agree that it depends on the type of acne. I get REALLY bad hormonal acne around my jaw and chin. The only thing that has worked (and it works great!) was getting started on the pill, specifically ortho tricyclen. My skin really looks great now.
