My son came home at 2, my daughter was 15 months. They both called their foster mother Mama or Mami. She called my son by his middle name - which is not even close to Joey. She called my daughter by her middle name ' Sofie" even though I asked her to call her Katie.

Both kids are just fine, extremely well adjusted and happy. They know their names and know that I am their mother. When they see pictures of their foster mom, who I call Mama Ana, they call her Mama Ana.

My son visited Guatemala with me after having been home a year or so. He called the foster mom Mama Ana, I was Mommy and when he was tired, hungry or fell down, he came crying for Mommy - me. Didn't seek her out once. He was pleasant and happy with her, but I was Mommy.

I know it is hard to hear your child call someone else mommy. Hang in there.

Long story on how it came about, but I escorted a baby home a few years ago. she was 18 months old at the time and had been in foster care the whole time. Because of the situation, she was with me for 5 days. when I picked her up she was crying for "mamma". By the time I handed her to her forever mamma she was crying and calling for "mamma" -- ME! She has adjusted beautifully and definitely knows who her forever mamma is.

Hang in there! You're son will be fine. Our son called his foster mom "Mama" and she called him by his birth name for 2 1/2 years! As soon as he saw me...he started calling ME "Mama" and there was no problem. When I arrived in Guatemala, I started calling him the name that we had chosen for him and, again, no problems.
This process will be over soon. Try not to let these little things upset you so much! Everything will be great and the process/wait will be SO worth it!!!!
