Question back from Guatemala - switch to which formula in U.S.?

Hello dear listeros,

I'm back from Guatemala with Elena. She is an amazing trooper; has been through a lot, but is very cheerful and easygoing overall. All is well, though i'd love to get a little more sleep!

Thank you SO much to those who posted when she was waking 5-7 times a night in Antigua. Your suggestions and support REALLY helped. Things have improved a lot. She slept 8 hours the last 2 nights, and only woke 1-2 times, so I feel like we're moving in a good direction.

A question -- for those of you who use the formula NAN 2 in Guatemala, what formula did you switch to in the U.S.? I was going to ask the pediatrician, but had a mixup with Elena's appointment on Friday, and now I'm going to run out of NAN 2 before the Dr. can see her.

Would love to her from anyone who has done this formula switch, and any thoughts about how to make it as smooth as possible. I recall someone saying that the switch sometimes upsets their stomachs...

thanks!!!

Elsa

Eva was having some serious diarhea issues on our pick up trip so we called both her U.S. pediatrician and her Guat pediatrician and they both said to switch her to enfamil lipil cold turkey. We did and it worked great.
She had also been on NAN 2 and the Guat ped. told me that was the cheapest formula and not good at all.

Connor was on Nan2 when he came home, and we switched him to Nestle Goodstart no problem. With Cristian, he was on the Parents Choice DHA (?) and did fine with that, too. We had been told that Nestle Goodstart was the equiv to Nan, but with Cristian we were more brave to try something different. Glad we did!

We came home in April of this year, and my DD was also on NAN 2. We switched her cold turkey to Similac Advance.

She was having diahrrea with NAN2 (or with the lack of food, maybe) but no problems whatsoever with Similac.

Good luck and welcome back!

Both Maria and Flora were on Nan2. With Maria we switched her gradually over to Goodstart without any problems. We tried the same thing with Flora and she was miserable...throwing up, I think she had a stomach ache, so after a couple of formulas and then whole milk, we eventually switched to soy milk, which we started out watered down and that worked. In my opinion you just have to pick one that you are comfortable with and give it a try. You may get lucky and the switch will be easy...or like Flora you may have to try a few things until they are comfortable. Good Luck!

We switched to Similac. Our ped. said it didn't matter which formula we switched to as long as it was a milk based formula (since Nan is). We switched her over slowly.

DS#1 came home on NAN also, and we switched to Enfamil at the pediatrician's recommendation (it's his favorite one). As we were just about to run out of NAN, we mixed the two formulas for a day and then switched-- no problems at all.

We switched to the Walmart generic brand soy formula, and the Enfamil Lipil and he had no problems whatsoever. We since switched to the Walmart generic brand sensitive which is a lactose free base and that is working great. Our pediatrician didn't want him to stay on the Soy when we got home, so we switched to the lactose free and he is fine. I was told that babies over 9 months should not have a problem switching formulas, and in our case that was correct.

I switched Naldo to Similac by mixing the Nan with the Similac over the course of a few days. He had no problems tummy wise. Good luck.

I just called the doctor to ask what formula to use. My daughter was also on Nan 2. He had me come in and he gave me 6 small cans of Enfamil Lipil. I did not have an appointment. I could just stop by for the formula. I switched slowly by mixing with the Nan 2.

My daughter was on Nan Lactosa -- and I did a slow, slow switch to whole milk (at adoption dr's recommendation).

I checked with Nestle & they said Good Start was the closest thing in US to Nan2.
