U.S. humanitarian workers

Here is the article:

A small plane carrying U.S. humanitarian workers crashed in a field in eastern Guatemala on Sunday, killing 10 people, including five Americans, some of them from western Wisconsin, an aviation official and a survivor said.

The pilot of the Cessna Cravan 208 reported engine trouble about 45 minutes after takeoff and tried to make an emergency landing 60 miles east of Guatemala City, civil aviation director Jose Carlos said.

Eight passengers were killed, along with the Guatemalan pilot and copilot, Carlos said. He said five of the passengers killed were Americans, but the nationalities of the others had not been determined.

Four Americans on board were injured. Carlos did not know the hometowns of any of the Americans.

Sarah Jensen, 19, of Amery, Wis., who survived with minor cuts and bruises, said she and her family were headed to a village in El Estor County to build homes for CHOICE Humanitarian, a group based in West Jordan, Utah. Her brother and father were killed in the crash, and her mother was seriously injured, she said in a hospital interview.

I know nothing about this organization, so I googled them. Here is a link to their webpage. It looks like they did important work in many parts of the world.

Choice Humanitarian

The region of the country that they were traveling to has faced many tragedies. The brutal evictions of the local indigenous people to make way for mining profits have been videotaped and the link is below.

YouTube - Violent Evictions at El Estor, Guatemala

It seems that among the dead are those who were traveling to help build homes for the people whose homes were destroyed in incidents like those in this video.

I mourn the loss of good people who selflessly gave their time and labor for the betterment of the world... one community at a time.
