Can someone explain what they are, what they're for and how to get them?

I was a lurker for three years before I officially signed on early 2005. As you see, no icon gift here either
 . I would love to see one or two  . And I don't know how people give/get them.

So here's my story.
I had a bunch bunch bunch from various forum friends (thanks guys!) while we were enduring our PGN wait. Then, I switched my screenname to arthymom from arthmom and my bunch bunch bunch dissapeared. My little icons just went bye bye...dissapeared...(Do good sob stories count?) Seriously though, it was March of 2005 (see Join date) when we began thinking about adoption. And if chosen, I'll give some points away to you for starting this thread ;-) and to those who are donating icons ;-)
