As most of you know, I am a kindergarten teacher. Today; a mother picked her child up from school and told me that she heard I was adopting. I told her that was correct. She then asked me " Which one of you is broken? You or your husband?" I looked at her and asked if she was serious. She said yes. All I could say was.....WOW! That's incredibly inappropriate! I then just simply walked away. Now I sort of feel bad for being rude. What do you all think???

Yup, You Win! I have NEVER heard anything so inappropriate. You Handled that well! The only thing rude was her,
and unfortunately for her and her child she doesn't sound very intelligent.....

My first reaction to your thread is that it's HER who should be sitting home feeling badly tonight! HOW RUDE! I can't believe she said that! I hope she didn't mean to sound that way and was TRYING to joke about it but, it's very inappropriate to invade your privacy like that! How about an "oh how wonderful for you" and then move on? We don't go up to pregnant women and say "I hear you're pregnant! What position did you and your husband use to get pregnant? Missionary? It IS your husband's baby, right?"! I mean come on! Don't you feel badly at all. You did exactly the right thing! You sound as though you have more grace in your pinky than that woman will ever have in her whole lifetime! Hooray for you! Keep your chin up!

I would have handled it a bit differently. I would have told her that it was her mouth that was broken and she really should go fix it before opening it again.

I like this response! Unfortunately, I always think of comebacks way too late. Yes, that woman was so out of line. I would have just died if I were you. I don't know what I would have said. Amazing how stupid people are. I don't care if she even said it in a joking way, that was WAY innapropriate. You were not the rude one, she was, and I hope she realizes why you reacted the way you did.

She was the RUDE one NOT you!! People amaze me all the time with just how stupid some of their comments are!! Hopefully the next time you see this woman she'll apologize!!! Just remember don't take it out on the child

I just love how people think only people with fertility problems adopt. We have no issues w/ getting pregnant but chose to adopt instead of getting pregnant.

I agree with other posters, it was the parent who was rude, not you. She should have at least taken the hint when you asked if she was serious!

I hate when ignorant people prove their status by asking ignorant questions so I've mastered the *perfect* response; when asked this type of question I simply blink my big 'ole eyes Goldie Hawn style, smile sweetly and repeat what they asked; you know, "Uh, what do you mean which one of us is broken, I don't understand what you're saying, what do you mean?" I will waste 30 minutes doing this over and over making them explain over and over until they finally "get it!" Tracy
