For those of you who have used attachment specialists...

This is a spin off thread from Larue's. As some of you may know, I am about finished with school to become a therapist. I had a very long talk with the dean (who was an attachment specialist FT before becoming the dean.) She said our area is so underrepresented with attachment resources. She encouraged me to meet with her and discuss the field.

Soooo...I have a meeting with her next week to discuss the path to specialization and opening a private practice (after interning and year of supervision, then licensure). I will be starting my internships soon and am going to seek out this field for them.

I want to know from you all that sought services. Which services helped your family? How long/how often did you see an attachment therapist/specialist? What did you not find helpful?

I basically just want to pick the experts' brains so I can provide the highest level of service. And this group is solid gold when it comes to getting getting excellent opinions and experiences.

I am doing a lot of this type of work. I have 2 more months---give or take a week to meet my 4,000 hours of post Masters experience and to get my LPCC. I will also becoming a registered play therapist.
I do a lot of attachment work and would be happy to answer any questions or offer any direction if you need it.
Here are two places you should check out if you want more info:

Association of Play Therapy- Association for Play Therapy -- Home
Theraplay www.theraplay.org

These two sites are my fav!
Your professors is correct. Working with young children---I usually see 2 - 8 year old. I get lots and lots of referrals because not many professionals in my area (I suspect other areas too) want to work little ones that young.
Best wishes!

Thanks, Amy!!! Once I finish my M.S. (soon!) I am a year and a dissertation from my Ph.D. I cannot wait for that day.

I have a very close network of classmates that will be beneficial as well - art and music therapists.

I am really excited as this incorporates so many of my passions - kids, adoption, helping others. So I think that bodes well for my level of commitment. Even though she made it sound incredibly lucrative, I am not in it one bit for the money. If people need help and can't pay, I'll provide services free. I feel that strongly about it.

Just gotta' fight that burn out thing, right?
