This is a "not so funny" story from our recent trip to vacation to Disney. Many people during our trip commented on how beautiful Jessica was- whether we were riding on the bus or sitting in the restaurant. Sometimes it led into the question of where she was born- but not always. I felt a little badly for my son. He was our one and only for 8 years before Jess arrived home.

Walking back to our room one night two people were sitting on a bench and they said how beautiful Jess was- then asked if we had adopted her. I simply said yes- she was born in Guatemala. I kept walking . My son chimed in.."well, I was adopted too but I'm from Michigan!" ( I guess he felt if she's getting credit for it then so should he!!!)

Here's the not so funny part: One of the ladies responded with- You are so lucky- you have two sets of parents- the home grown kind and the STORE BOUGHT kind! As I was almost gagging and couldn't think of a correct response to this my 9 year old responed with-

Actually, I have three sets- God in heaven is all of our Fathers! I was so proud of him. We kept walking. Just thought I would share!

STORE BOUGHT kind? How RUDE! I'm glad you kept walking! Hoorah for your son! He sounds like a winner! Tell him to keep up the good work! Why is it that people can never just keep their comments to themselves huh?

First, congrats for your son saying what he did. Second, STORE BOUGHT what the heck do people think, we go to the store and get to pick and choose what child we want from a shelf? I wish people would stop and think before the open their big mouths. Even if some dont mean it to come out badly, please, store bought. But what a wonderful come back from your son. Tammy

A friend of mine had a similar comment once from a total stanger who asked "Is he one of those $30 000 babies from Guatemala" My friend smiled and replied "My son is priceless, thankyou".

It is a retort that I have been keeping in the back of my mind.

I think people like that are always going ot make some negative comment no matter, for your family it was adoption, for another set of strangers she would seize on the kids' hair color, height, weight, teeth anything so she could be negative. Some love to stir the pot.

Tell him there is a whole TOWN in GA proud of him!!! I told this story to our kids at church tonight. YEAH FOR HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i know it's not supposed to be funny, but i have to laugh at how odd people are- store bought? come on? what is she thinking?

What a quack!!! That was so rude of her!!! I think I would have had to ask how she knew about store bought parents... were her children a result of the frozen section?? I mean cruel I know, but hell you never hear people saying that kind of crap to those who choose fertility as an outlet. I did fertility treatments prior to adopting and I would have been pretty mad if someone would have commented to me about how my child was made so why do they think it's ok if we've adopted?? I have a bio child and he was never told he was lucky to have been conceived!! Ok rant over!!
