Question OT: Potty training questions

OK - Ruby has decided she's ready to potty train. She will pee on the potty sometimes but still goes in her diaper quite a bit. She seems to be able to tell more when she needs to poop and will do that in the potty too. The problem is she now HATES diapers. I have to hold her down to put it on and she screams forever after she has it on. Any ideas on getting her to be more happy in a diaper while potty training? Do I just go get tons of plastic pants and go straight to those? Any other ideas?

Thanks...

My son is being potty trained & he goes pee pee in the potty about 90% of the time he even wakes up in morning w/dry diaper but will not poop yet. I put him in pull ups since they are easier to use then diapers. Until I can get him to do both in the potty I will keep him in pull ups.. Your daughter can pull them up her self & feel like a big girl & you still get the coverage of a diaper in the pull ups.. Good luck hope this helps.

I second the pullups. They're one of the best inventions. They tear off at the hips if you want to open them like a regular diaper and not remove all the clothes (and then put on a regular diaper) otherwise they work just like undies. And you can reuse the same one all day if they stay clean and dry, otherwise accidents aren't any more of a problem than they were with diapers. I love them.

We actually cloth diapered DD for the most part and considered the cloth training pants with a vynal cover when it was time to potty train so she could have the underwear experience, but cleaning poo out of underpants--and more importantly getting those underpants off without making a huge mess--is SUCH A PAIN. So we used pullups for about 6 weeks while she got the hang of potty training. She did great, so one box of about 60 got us through until we could switch completely to big girl pants. Cost wise it wasn't much more than if I had to buy 5-6 pair of training underwear and the vynal pants and environmentally I figured one box of disposable pullups wasn't so bad considering we'd skipped the whole diaper phase.

Good luck!

Since your little one only needs protection for some pee accidents (not poo), I would recommend sticking with cloth panties. There are some waterproof types for when a puddle isn't acceptable (e.g., going out).

I found that once my girls had developed sphincter control, they did way better in panties. I just gave away about 100 diapers that I thought I'd need, but didn't because I just decided to brave it, even overnight (with a waterproof flannel pad over the sheet). Even away from home, the girls did way better when they didn't have a diaper on.

I did use disposable pull-ups while the girls were getting used to the potty but weren't ready to go all day without a diaper. They are quite convenient, but my girls never thought of them as different from a diaper. Maybe your daughter will, though, if you pitch it the right way.

Good luck!

I had the same issue with DD and the pull-up/diaper comparison. She thought they were the same thing, so we only used them for naptime & bedtime until she woke up dry on a consistent basis. We used the vinyl panties for about a week and then went right to the cotton ones (too bulky for my princesa-on-the-move). She used to have about 1 accident a week, but I think that really helped with her training because she knew when one was coming and could tell us right away.

Good luck!

Thought I'd share. I bought the potty training book from the pottytrainer.com and had my son potty trained in 3 days. We still have an occassional accident but that's okay. I highly reccommend her book! I had no problems getting him to pee on the potty. He did not however want to poop on the potty. Then i reread her FAQ section, and it helped me with that too. If you want any of her tips PM me. It really was amazing how easy and quick it happened.
