Favorite Children's Book (and why)

I'm looking for some new children's books to read to my son. Besides the popular 'adoption' themed books often recommended on this forum, what children's books would you recommend to a friend (and why)?

I am an avid reader and I attribute it to my first book ever given to me, called Silly Billy.

Depends on the age of your child. My kids are 19 and 21 months old, and they are just getting into books by P.D. Eastman. This is one of the best preschool authors ever (in my humble opinion). Favorites: "Go, Dog, Go"; "Are You My Mother?" (I used to wonder if that one was OK for adoptees, but at this age, they really aren't cognizant of adoption.) And "Ten Apples Up On Top." The girls are also just getting into simplified versions of the old fairy tales - the three bears, the little red hen, that type of thing. They also like Mother Goose and other short rhymes / prayers, and an illustrated book of lullabies that I sing to them every night. At the toddler age, I'd focus most on beautiful pictures and nice-sounding language. "I Love You Sun, I Love You Moon" is a nice one for younger kids.
