I second Lake Atitlan! It was beautiful! We stayed at Hotel Posada del Don Rodrigo. It was really nice but bring your own hairdryer!

Lake Atitlan (I'd stay at Hotel Atitlan if you can afford it), Chichi for shopping, Antigua for beauty (I loved the cooking school there as well as 1-week immersion Spanish school if you have time for that).

I think going to Tikal would be awesome. Perfect opportunity! Never been anywhere but Antigua but if I had the chance I would do Lake Atitlan, Antigua, and the Tikal ruins.

Forgot to say that the 1000 places to see before you die travel book has 4 Guat places to see (I always follow their recommendations & religiously keep track of my points):
Antigua Lake Atitlan Chichicastengo Tikal (which I didn't get it....plan to do it in a few yrs) For a relatively small country, that is a lot of places -- you can't go wrong by following their suggestions. If you want to know why they recommend those places, you can read the blurbs for them the next time you are in a bookstore...

no doubt about it- go to tikal! its the perfect opportunity for you without kids. that is of course if you're into ruins/temples, history, walking a lot, and nature.
my wife and i went on our visit trip and i think it was one of the coolest things i've ever seen. be aware though, its hard work walking all over and climbing the temples- i don't think i've ever sweat that much, but we did go in may and that is one of the hottest times of the year- 100 degrees and humid as heck. if you have any questions, let me know- we stayed in the park 2 nights- that's also not for everyone- no air conditioning, power only for less than half the day, etc. enjoy! |
