We have a permanent resident card and the original passport from Guatemala for our child... does anyone know if we could travel to Mexico with that passport or do we need to get an US Passport.

Technically, if your child is an American citizen, he/she should enter and leave the US as a US citizen. You probably can use the green card---but it really should be used with a valid Guatemalan passport. If you are flying, you should have the card and a valid passport. If you are driving, you can probably do it if the passport has expired. More importantly, you need to check with the Mexican Embassy in Washington (or one of the Consulates) to see is your child needs a visa for Mexico. Guatemalan citizens normally do---but since you have the residency card, maybe he/she won't need a visa for Mexico.

I traveled with a green card and Guatemalan passport to Mexico many times. All you have to do is pay an extra "Visa" fee when you buy airfare. If you are driving, you will pay at the booth.
