OT- stressed out / job search
I have been really worried / stressed out about relocating to TX and finding jobs. My husband and I want to relocate to either Dallas or Austin. Dallas is my first choice and Austin is my husbands first choice. Well we have submitted our resumes everywhere. We both work in the financial area me in operations him in sales. We have received zero calls. Ok well he did receive a phone interview in Austin for a position with the company I work for but has not been called for a second interview. I finally called the recruiter today for the positions I applied for in Austin with my company and have a phone interview set up for Monday. I have not pursued Austin to much because Dallas was my first choice. Do people not want to call candidates that live out of state? I did finally put my step moms TX address on my resume so this might help. It is just so frustrating. How do you find jobs in a new state where you want to move? I don't get it....

This big of a life change certainly has to be stressful. I wish it was an easier change for you.
I do think that being out of state hinders your chances. I think it is something that is considered during the resume review phase of the process. I know when I look at candidates it really depends on the candidate and the position. If it is a candidate that is "moving home" to be closer to his or her parents, I feel much better about the chances for success. If it is a candidate that has no strings to the area, I am a little apprehensive as I don't know how long they will stay if they find they don't like the area. Training is so expensive and sometimes it's just not worth the risk. I'm sorry, not the response you wanted I know. But maybe it can give you a little insight and you may be able to change a few things on your resume or during your conversations with potential employers to make them more comfortable with your situation. |

My advice is just keep trying. Hopefully your address change on the resume will help. When we relocated I was able to get a job easily because I'm bilingual and a teacher. So, in essence, I was trying to get a job in a field where there was a shortage. Both of these areas are strong economically and have a ton of opportunities. You could persue more jobs in Austin and see what happens....perhaps you are meant to be there? Good luck!!!!

I've done a lot of recruiting and hiring and I think the address thing is big. I hired an out of state/relocating person one time and it was a nightmare - many problems with her move forced us to go without an employee for a few extra months. I groan when I see out of state people now and, unless I'm desperate and dont have many in-state prospects, I really dont read anything past their address.
Hopefully the address change will help move things along! I think you made a good decision to switch it.

I'm in the same boat with you! I'm moving from Phoenix to Seattle this weekend to try and find a job. I haven't had much luck either, but hopefully that will change once we're there.
Best of luck to you! I'm in the financial business, on the operations side too and the jobs are just few and far between. |

We were doing this 2 years ago but in our industry it's pretty standard for people to up and move across lines. However, I did make sure to note in my cover letter that I was particularly interested b/c of the location and our personal reasons for wanting to move there.
GL!

We just moved to St Louis from Nashville. Our new employers had to have patience due to the time it took us to sell our house (9 months). I wasn't going to move without selling first. I'm sure thats a consideration prospective employers, ie:how quickly you would be available. Good luck!
