I have yet to hear a successful adoption from Nepal. In addition for some time it was shut down and there was problems with correption. A lot of people started but never completed and brought home a child.

I agree with the last poster. It is a lengthy process, but I have not been in contact with an agency or on a forum where an adoption was completed. My memory is that an affiliation with the island is the best (only) way to complete an adoption. Could be wrong. Going on the info we received about 4 months ago.....

Our friends brought their son home recently. They started their adoption just before we started Hannah's and she has been home since Oct. '06. It was a lenghty process and he was a little over 2 when he came home, but it was totally worth it! He is such a cutie pie and is adjusting well. Just wanted to let you know that there are successful adoptions from there, they just might not be easy. Then again...what international adoptions are easy???

Nepal is currently closed, but working on reopening. The children who are coming home now (or recently) were cases that were in-process under the old system and being allowed to finish while they revamp.

The Nepali government has announced a few of the changes that there will be, the biggest being that referrals will no longer be made by orphanages, but by a central government agency (more like the China system in that regard). I think they will also be requiring that agencies in other countries be registered with them, but I don't remember for certain on that one.

A Nepali delegation recently visited some agencies in the US, learning about their processes in order to better understand what makes for ethical adoptions on the receiving country's end. Two of the agencies they visited are ones that, in my opinion, are highly ethical and will serve as good models.

There is no word on when they will reopen for international adoption, but one agency I know of is optimistic that it will be reopening. However, the waitlists are expected to be somewhat long. With the long waits from China + the situation in Guatemala, more people are looking into other countries and Nepal is attractive to many people.

Our agency had/has a Nepal program with several successful placements. The program is currently closed. Here is a list of requirements that they had posted.

Only heterosexual applicants are eligible
Married couples or single female applicants (minimum age 35) are accepted
Parents must be at least 30 years older than the child, and will be accepted up to age 50
Married couples must be married for at least 4 years
Married couples must submit evidence of primary or secondary infertility
The child adopted must be the youngest in the home and of the opposite gender of any child(ren) already in the home (I think this also means that if you currently have a boy and a girl, you can not adopt from Nepal).
No more than two children currently in the home
Household income should be no lower than $40,000 (Home ownership is preferred)

I suspect the Nepal programs will reopen over the next few months or so as the new guidelines have been established in Nepal and will just be a matter of getting it all set up and running. One agency I contacted has already been accredited and is taking applications, but has yet to be offically running. I found their program attractive except for the fees, which would run about $10,000 more than out adoption from India. That and the fact that it would be a "new" program makes me more hesitant to go with Nepal. Would love to if we had the money and all the time in the world....

Our agency also has had successful adoptions from Nepal. Our agency/SW (basically it is one person) visited Nepal last summer for an adoption. PM me if you want the agency info.

A gal from my adoption support group here in NJ successfully adopted a little boy from Nepal. But like the others said, I think it was with some hitches.

Snook - we just started an adoption from Nepal. I have researched and talked to a number of agencies. Nepal will reopen soon, and the process will be quite different, though still risky. In our case we made sure that we choose an agency that had other programs we could qualify for in the event that Nepal closes again. We also chose an agency that would allow us to transfer some of the fees we had paid. This decision took a lot of soul searching. Please feel free to PM me. Best wishes with your journey!

I meet a family last month who just returned home with their little girl. They don't know how old she is. she looked about 2. She was abandonded in a buddist monestery. The mother visited for 3 weeks Then spent a month at pick up in the orphanage. she said it was bleak, but a huge experience. The little girl spoke Napalese, a the mother had learned enough at the orphange to communicate.

I know someone who has 2 adopted children from Nepal. Not sure how long the process was total, but they did shut down in the middle of her process and then finally reopened and they finished. That little boy is home. When they went to pick him up, they fell in love with a little girl, and now she is home too. That adoption went much quicker.
This girl that I know has had some serious health problems and Nepal was the only country that she could adopt from having these health problems.
