Question OT: Room darkening shades

I am thinking about trying room darkening shades to see if they will help DS sleep past 5:30am. I have tried everything else to get him to sleep in a little later but nothing works! If any of you tried these where do you find them? Did they work?

Thanks

Joy

Joyloo, out of complete desperation, I tacked up a heavy blanket over their big window (they had been getting up sooo early!). We have the wooden (plantation?) blinds, so we would have to do a darkening screen.

It worked like a charm. They slept until 7:30 and have since. Yahoooooo!

Ours came from Home Depot. They have various 'darkness' levels, so make sure you are noticing which are which.

You might try taping/tacking a blanket up over the window for a few days to see if the dark really will help or if that is just his time to wake up before spending money on shades. Unluckly, my daughter was an early riser regardless of the level of darkness, but we do this when we are on vacation, etc. and in a room that gets light really early.

Good luck!

edited to add: Jules was typing at the same time with the same idea!

we have them in our sons room too. They are a life saver, especially at nap time!

We got ours at bed bath and beyond. They aren't very pretty, but they're dark!

Just bought some and I think they really work! Our girls' rooms get direct sunlight first thing in the morning and these curtains really do make the room darker. We purchased ours through pottery barn kids, they are sail cloth drapes lined with room darkening fabric. They also had solid white. My girls sleep until 8:00 a.m., if I accidentally leave the curtains open they are up much earlier.

Thanks for your feedback! It's great to hear that it worked on some of your kids. We have some heavy drapes that we use downstairs during the winter that I think will darken the room so I will try those first. We don't have air conditioning so I am trying to figure out how to get some air in the room to keep it cool with the drapes up. I guess if worse comes to worse we can get an a/c for his room.

Thanks again

Joy

One of our kids get up at 5:30am also so we bought some from Menards and they really make the room black but he still gets up at 5:30am and it's been a couple of months since we've put them up!

Oh my gosh, run to JcPenney's! They work like a charm and were VERY reasonable. We bought roller style pull down shades. They were only around $8.00 each and are called "room darkening".
The color exposed on the inside of the room when you pull them down is solid white, but you can get them colored on the otherside so they look prettier from the outside of the home (if that's an issue).
For us, all white worked! I didn't care as long as they kept the room nice and dark!

I got mine at Walmart...they are like the ones hotels use and they can hook to your curtains or hang on a double rod. They do make the room dark...which helps with bedtime in the summer, but my early riser is an early riser no matter how dark it is---and that hasn't changed even as she approaches her 6th birthday!

I have the roller style ones from WalMart. They work great! Not pretty but they hide behind her curtains and she sleeps so who cares I think they were less than $5.00 each and now she will actually go to bed before it gets dark which is REALLY good when it does not get dark until 9:30!
