Question Help? Readoption Questions For MN

Anyone recently do a name change with an IR3 Visa from Guatemala? What do we need to do? We want to legally change his name and get a new birth certificate with the new name. I saw that with IR3 visa Minnesota recognizes the adoption and allows for re-adoption. In order to do the name change do we re-adopt procedures?

Do I need to use my agency to do that or can it be done and save $. Any insight and help is appreciated.
-TIA!

I don't knw if this will be at all helpful, but We changed his name with the readoption. We used a lawyer that my agency suggested, although I hear some peope do go it on their own. I felt more comfortable having them do it. It was kinda fast and easy here in NY. I'm not sure about your state though. Try calling your agency, or call family court in your area, since that is the court that does the re adoption,(at least here in NY). Good Luck!

Hi,
I'm from Wisconsin but our agency is in MN. With my 3 year old son the agency gave us a form to have notarized and then I drove to the county courthouse and set up a time for the re-adoption.I'm thinking there was a very minimal fee involved. Following the re-adoption I sent in paperwork for the new birth certificate and name change. Our agency was not involved aside from the form we needed to have notarized. I would contact them and ask if they have someone who handles the post-adoption stuff ( at our agency it was a different person than our SW) MN and WI may be different, but it was a pretty simple process for us.

Hello..

You can call your local County Government Office, they should be able to answer your questions. We got the templates to file with the court from our homestudy agency (in MN) and we are filing those ourselves...you have to pay a filing fee, but it is much cheaper than hiring an atty. to do it.

Hope that helps,
Mini

We came home on an IR3 visa last year in MN and our agency gave us a few forms to fill out and have notarized. Our agency sent them in to the courthouse and did the rest. I think in our county the filing fee was $250 then the rest is for the birth certificate, etc. which wasn't much. We came home with our second one this year on an IR4 and everything is the same except we have to make a 10 minute court appearance.

We just completed a name change in MN

We have been home since Feb. with our daughter. This week we finally had her adoption hearing in our county changing her name and creating a MN birth certificate and adoption decree from MN. Our agency sent us all the paper work to file with our county court. There was a court fee of $250.00. Also a fee for the certified MN birth certificate and MN adoption decree. We had the hearing and it took about 10 minutes. We also came home on an IR-3. Best of luck to you.
