Formula Expiration question
A friend of mine works for a hospital medical supply company. He told me that as per company policy, baby formula is thrown out the month of the date on the can that it is to expire. The formula is also thrown out if the can is dented. He said I could have that formula. I am hoping to be able to send it to Mayan Families or orphanage. However, by the time I get it and ship it out I don't think it will get to Guatemala before the expiration date. It could possibly get there on the expiration date or two weeks after it expired. Is is worth it to send the formula? The health of any child is first priority. I don't know if they would use it.
Any thoughts?

I would think it would be fine. If it were a year or so past the expiration date then probably not, but even a month or two I think would be ok. And, as bad as this sounds a formula that is expired is better than no formula at all, I would think.
If you are part of the yahoo group I would ask Sharon to be sure. Also, maybe instead of shipping it people from the forum would be willing to take a can or two down when they visited or went on pick up trip.

gwenrenee007 I was thinking the same thing. I am hoping to have some forum friends take it down. With all the recent outs (
) there should be quite a few families travelling soon.Who is Sharon on the Yahoo group?

You're probably speaking about Sharon from Mayan Families. She does great work in Guatemala.
Working in the food service industry for most of my life, here is my opinion. Most places will reject a can if it is dented. 9 out of 10 times there is no damage to the contents, most will just not accept a dented can. Most facilities also have their own sell by or use by dates. Those dates don't mean the product is bad, it's just their internal quality controls. I wouldn't have a problem sending formula that is just slightly past it's expiration date to Guatemala. |
